Web Browser in DSM?

Postby jetspeedz » Fri Aug 26, 2011 7:53 am

Is there a third party app that allows a mini/lite web browser software to run in DSM? This is not a proxy server question but is there such a program?

Thanks

If you would like very light, lynx is a text web browser available. Just do ipkg install lynx and then type lynx to start it up.

A graphical web browser would likely take too much RAM and CPU resources to be able to run decently (also) on the smallest models.

You can use Putty (over SSH) to route all your native web traffic through your NAS.

http://kimmo.suominen.com/docs/proxy-through-ssh/

Just make sure you set the browser to use the remote proxy. There's a command in about:config, you can look that one up

You can also use FF portable and Putty to make this separate from your installed browser.

maxxfi - i was thinking the same thing but was hoping you would not say it. Ram wouldn't be much of a issue since im sure there is a way to allocate scratch space but CPU might be an issue. Problem with using a proxy I'm sure anything other than the company designated ports are blocked. and Time Warner blocks certain ports as well so its a crap shoot.

thanks

Ironically I moved to a company that blocks every port other than 80 and 443 and I can't do an ssh tunnel :(. I'll have to play with it some more, but I've asked Synology for a DSM web browser too.

My feeling is if they can make a browser work in a phone it should work on the slowest DS.

Some people spent a lot of time writing the Help files, use them!

There are multiple posts with requests of a Gui based browser in DSM you are not in the minority.

I hope they add it soon

I made a feature request at Synology support. However, the answer was quite vague.

I made one too months ago before they released DSM 4.x and Sang is the guy who I have been corresponding with on emails. Basically told me he would ask the Developers about this but he couldn't promise anything which I expected. The more requests are made the better so thanks

Yes please, this must be #1 priority for NAS. And best thing would be a Java-based one so that it hogs CPU completely. Choice #2 would be installing X.org, some DE/WM and sticking FF or Chrome or similar on the NAS, then you could use VNC or whatever to connect to it. That will bring the current FW up from those 150 megs to 1.5 gigs at least and ease the maintenance quite a lot.

Gee i guess the smartphone in your pocket must be completely useless when you browse on it

Using VNC for some people is not an option when you can't install the client or it is blocked by a proxy or firewall so a local browser resolves that issue.

Get a clue buddy this is not 2001 where phones or devices get hogged up by browser resources.

My smartphone does not run tons of services and is not connected to Gbit network, storing tens of MB/s. But as said, having a browser that is accessible via browser is simply top priority and everyone would want to use it. Synology will for sure go bankrupt unless they implement this ASAP.

P.S. You totally missed the point on VNC, go Google up sarcasm.
