Reverse the button!

Postby dh405 » Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:42 am

This seems like an incredibly simple thing, and I'm surprised that it doesn't seem to be supported by default. I have a couple clients who would like to back their NAS up to an external hard drive in order to transport it offsite on regular intervals.

As it is, this is a bit of a pain. They have to plug the USB HDD in to the port, go back to their PC, log in, run the backup, then walk back to the NAS and grab the drive. This seems completely absurd considering there's a button right on the front of that sweet little toaster-sized box 'o bits.

Is there some way to make the button on the front of the device run a certain backup task? I just want to set it to dump all data onto an external. Seems simple, yes?

You can get button even from /dev/ttyS1. I am currently writing a blog post about it. The only problem is that by default this file is reading by scemd.
