Can't get my DS101 booted any more

Postby pontus » Sat Oct 28, 2006 2:07 pm

Hi,

I have used my DS101 sucessfully for several years now. I have updated the firmware several times, and there have not been any problems. Lately I have been "playing around" with it a little, enabeling telnet, installing some scripts and also, I admit, some small programs from Internet.

Anyway, yesterday when I rebooted the DS101 it couldn't finalize it's boot procedure. The power led continued to flash. After some time I stopped the DS101 and started again. Same thing happened again. I tried pressing the reset button twice, but still the same. By the way, there was only a single beep both times, never a double beep.

As a next step I opened the DS101 and took the disk out. I attached it to a PC where I have an EXT3 driver. There were three partitions, one marked SWAP and one with the operating system. The operating system partition was fully readable.

The third partition was not readable.

I removed all partitions and put the disk back to the DS101. Still I the same problem. When putting the disk back once more to the PC I found that it hadn't been writing anything to the disk this time.

Is there anyone out there who can give me a hint on what to do?

Thanks for your reply, but yes, unfortunally I have. Disk station assistant says "Failed to establish network connection."

By the way, my switch does not report any device connected at that interface.

You can try to connect the NAS directly to your PC then press 4 seconds the reset button until the DS Bips, then press again 4 seconds until the DS bip several time, then restart the DS Assistant process.

I'm still trying to figure out what has gone wrong with the DS101.

It feels to me like it wouldn't recognize that there is a hard disk present at all.

When pressing the power button, the power led imediately starts flashing. After a few seconds the HDD led flashes briefly a few times, and then the status led is lit. At the time when the status led is lit, there is a beep. About 8 seconds later there is a second beep.

After this second beep, nothing else happens. The power led keeps flashing, no activity at the disk, no activity at the LAN.

Can someone describe what should have happened at start-up?

I have moved this topic to the modding room, hopefully the modding community can help you.

Good luck.

I had a similar problem with a DS106. I have replaced the busybox with another/newer version. The DS came up, but only into a stage where I was not able to connect using LAN. It was not possible to use the Assistant either. Mounting the disk in a linux pc and replacing the busybox with the original binary solved the problem.

I formated the hard disk in a PC to get a fresh start. That was not enough to get the 101 running again. I think that this should have done the same trick as connecting a new disk as suggested by Emanuel.

Unfortunally formating the disk means that I cannot any more try Bartik's tip.

Actually the reason why I haven't been in here looking at your replies lately is that I have given up the 101 and bought myself a new 101j which is now running smoothly with the disk from the old 101.

Maybe I'll try to put the disk back to the 101 just to see what happens...

Hello bartik et all

I'm having exactly the same problem as you described above... a DS101 which does not boot anymore. Unfortunately I exchanged the busybox binary with the latest release 1.5 after this no bootup anymore.
Now I'm looking for the 1.1.0 release which is standard for the DS101 but unfortunately I could not find anything.

Couly one of you kindly help me by providing (FTPing) an original DS101 busybox binary. I would realy appreciate your support!

I would suggest either to download the pat update file for your DS or find the original pat file on the CD you got with the diskstation. Rename it to .tar.gz and then use gzip -d and tar xvf to unpack it. Or use winzip... Extract the desired binary busybox and copy it onto the DS disk you mounted in the PC (I suppose you have the disk mounted in PC)
