User External HD for Torrents?

Postby globalrebel » Mon May 21, 2012 7:54 pm

Hello Everyone,

I just got my DS212j and am loving it. I bought this system to be used primarily as my torrent system and media server. I have installed the latest Transmission package and LOVE this setup! I do however, have one concern . .

I don't want to have my HD's running 24/7 because I'm afraid that they will go bad faster. I was wondering if it would be better for me to attach a USB HD for all active torrents and have the internals be used for the media server? I will be leaving this NAS on literally 24/7, 365/year. Torrents will be ALWAYS RUNNING. So, will the be too much wear and tear on the internals? Or does it really even matter if I use the internals instead of an external for active torrents?

I just want to be sure that these HD's last me a long time (I've had other HD's last me for over 5 years with no issues) and aren't being overworked with constantly being on 24/7.

Your input is GREATLY appreciated!

I would hope that the HD's are up to 24/7 use, but it sounds like a good idea to let them hibernate (sleepmode) if possible.

If you want to use an external disk for Transmisson, you could change the settings.
They're in /usr/local/transmission/var/settings.json
Just change the watch and download directories :
