APC SmartUPS - IP control?

Postby GlynH » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:57 pm

Hi there,

Purchased an RS812 earlier this year and it has proven to be a superb NAS so far with even the DMS3.2->4.0 upgrade completing smoothly in 10 minutes or so...thanks Synology.

It is good to see that my APC SmartUPS 1500 is supported by Synology but it would appear that this is the case only if a USB connection is present?

There is a box in where the IP address of the UPS is intended to go but it looks like without a USB connection all bets are off.

Now APC are industry-standard and I would imagine that most have the Network Management Card fitted (all three of mine have) and I use these to control/shutdown various other devices connected by IP on the network.

It seems to me that most other Manufacturers support APC by using IP not USB (or is this my Enterprise head thinking here) and it seems to be an odd omission to make.

I for one would like to see Synology expand the UPS option to include IP control without having the USB connection present.

I find it difficult to believe after looking at the large rack-mounted NAS devices Synology make that they don't support IP control for UPS without having to have the USB connection present.

I believe that IP control was in use long before USB came along and looking at the restricted compatibility list of recommended/tested UPS I would have thought that IP control would have been first on the priority list...

So...how about implementing IP control in addition to USB please Synology?

Thanks for listening.

Kind regards,

I second this feature request. I just purchased my first Synology NAS and was under the impression that it could run as a client to a UPS server on the network. Should be relatively easy to implement since nut is already implemented in DM. I'm kinda surprise this is not already supported in level of product.

I completely agree. It looks like the only way to do network monitoring of your Synology server is with another Synology server. If Synology plans to compete in the enterprise level market it seems the omission of support for SNMP UPS monitoring (especially with APC network cards) is a silly omission. I sent a feature request to Synology regarding this. Please do the same, and then maybe they will address this.

Agreed. SNMP trap enabled shutdown sequences would be extremely useful.

Wish I had seen this forum prior to buying the network card for my APC Smart UPS.

I talked with Synology support regarding this, and they are apparently actively looking into supporting apc network protocols. Not sure when this will be included, but they are pursuing it. :-) If I hear an update I'll post it.

+100 here too, both at the SOHO and at the enterprise level this would be a great addition. Any update on progress on this?

Please support this

I have 4 x 3KW UPS with power routed to several rooms where various protected devices are located. I can't route the USB connection

I purchased my second synology product last week and just realized that connecting a single UPS to multiple DS or RS products, not to mention a PC and a synology NAS, is not possible and frankly unacceptable.

This is very frustrating as I was just about to place an order for an APC SMX2200RMLV2U which supports the network card referenced in a link (by dMajo » Mon Dec 10, 2012 5:13 am). I need to purchase a decent UPS to put in my rack and see no reason whatsoever why multiple UPS units for each synology NAS would be required.

I am in total agreement with dMajo and everyone else on this thread!

I also learned from APC that their Power Chute Network software v3.01 is available for linux which supports an IP connection and works with their interface card. Is it at all possible to load this code instead of NUT on synology products to access the network port for UPS shutdown? ... better yet, can Synology provide an app on the Package Center to install a version of the code for everyone who needs UPS IP shutdown capability to shut down their system.

I'm done venting... Synology: PLEASE solve this issue! thanks.

forgot to mention in my earlier post...

Can simple signaling be daisy chained?

If so, it may be a possible quick where the APC network card can be set up in simple mode for UPS sutdown of the Synology NAS units while the computer and workstations can be shut down via the network.

I think you can connect the UPS to the nas by usb (setting up the nas not to shutdown the ups) and use the network for the other devices.

My problem is different. I have the equipment around with centralized ups room. Moreover every server have a redundant power conected each one to its own ups. I mean that ups1 serve PowetSupply1 of several servers while ups2 serve the redundant ps on this servers. By network management the servers start a safe shutdown only when both the ups are down on batteries.
I will like that a NAS with redundant power supply will be able to do the same. Moreover also the single supplied NAS is not located in the same room as UPS and cannot be usb wired. This is for me a point of decision when buying new equipment.

Personnaly, I use apcupsd with apcupsd-cgi from ipkg package and it work fine on my apc smart-ups 2200 with a APC AP9617 network card.

I've done a post many years ago about it :

http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=14318&p=61434&hilit=apcupsd#p61434

But it shoud be very "cool" if it is support by synology.
