Can we have dropbox support instead?

Postby cheungtsw » Thu Apr 19, 2012 12:48 am

Cloud Station only has Win support only and it is not very useful.

Dropbox has Win, MAC, IOS & Android support which is much more useful.

there are some major differences.
dropbox provides limited storage, either you are free or paying user.
cloudstation will use your available amount of free space on your diskstation.

so i dont get the point, how and why you want to combine dropbox and diskstation? how should this work and look like?
you would always be limited to the storage you have available on dropbox.
by the way, dropbox does not support mapping the main dropbox sync folder to a network share.

I would also like to see a Dropbox client for the Synology NAS.

As noted, Dropbox has a working client for OSX, which Cloudstation does not, and appears likely to never have (based on numerous broken promises regarding release dates - e.g., "with DSM 4 final"). While the total storage is limited with Dropbox, the software that syncs all the clients is the lifeblood of Dropbox, and therefore likely to be the focus of continual development and support. For Synology, Cloudstation appears to be just another half-assed gimmick shoe-horned into the software so they can have another bullet point in their marketing materials. Who knows how well it will be developed, maintained and supported (looking at the lack of an OSX client, again).

Also, Dropbox has a great web browser-based client that allows you to access your files from any device, even one on which you don't have application-installing privileges (e.g., computer lab, friends' house, work computer, etc.). Again, Synology can _sort-of_ replicate this functionality with dynamic DNS, port forwarding, ISP cooperation and less development resources, but its functionality will depend upon the quality of your ISP (I bet dropbox.com has better uptime than Cox cable), the reliability of your home's power supply, etc.

In short, don't try to make us use your inferior software by providing us without access to better options -- let us have a dropbox client, and then try to make your own software better, so we choose to use it on its merits. If you can.

This is _exactly_ why a native client that runs on the Synology is needed, because running the client software on one box and storing the files on another isn't a reliable solution.

I'm working on a dropbox client SPK package. I already have the basic functionality working, I'm just working on the OAuth workflow, Synology DSM integration, and error handling. I expect in about a month or so to have something ready for others to test. I am doing the client in python, so you'll need to have it installed, usually via ipkg. If you're interested in testing, please let me know.

Please let me know when your package isready for test
Thanks

I am also very interested in testing for you. I have python 2.6 installed (via Zebulon's repository) on my DS1511+ with the latest DSM 4.0-2219.

Don't see why it could not be done.

I have a Dropbox client for my Zyxel NSA 310 which works pretty well, albeit within the limited Dropbox space allocation. I can't see it working any better, as Dropbox themselves are pushing their corporate Dropbox for Groups.

The NSA310 is pretty good, but a bit functional and package limited compared to the DS110j and 411+II I support. A different spin on Pro-Sumer NAS's.

Thanks everyone who volunteered to help. I just moved from the Midwest to the East coast, so progress on the Dropbox client has been on pause. We're almost unpacked, so I should be able to resume progress soon.

Hope, we will see dropbox support soon))

Here is my wish list for next versions ;)
[*] standard backup functionality support (timelines, schedules etc.);
[*] data encryption support;
[*] functionality to back just particular files and folders only (for ex., to backup *.jpg files only, or to skip *.arw files and _badquality folders);
[*] possibility to backup to webdav servers (probably, as separate package).

I could also use this. I have a very crappy upload speed (courtesy of TalkTalk) and whenever I want to upload anything bigger than 50MB to my dropbox account I end up leaving my laptop turned on during the night. Now, if I could just just pop these files into a shared folder on my Synology and let it upload to dropboox it would be great!
