DS412+ and DX510

Postby johanvdk » Mon Apr 09, 2012 3:21 pm

Hi There,

Have been reviewing to buy a new NAS, I have a DS101 and aDS 101J, yes early adaptor from synology! consider a DS412+, but cannot understand why a DS412+ does not support the DX510, whilst a DS1512 and a DS712 do support this, can this be enabled or will it come with next update ?

Thanks!

I'd like to know the answer to this as well.
Currently evaluating which disk station to buy and this might be a deciding factor for me.

I can't really see why it should not be supported, unless the ds412+ uses an incompatible eSata controller.

Hi Johan,

It's great to hear you've been a long-time Synology user! Thanks for your great question.

In answer, technically you could plug DX510 into the DS412+ using the eSATA port, but the hardware is not designed for the two units to be used together. So if you need the expandability option we must highly advise that you choose a compatible model. For example, the DS412+ will not be able to power on the expansion unit, and you would always have to make sure the DX510 was powered on first before turning on the DS412+. In addition, the DS412+ does not have a lock for the eSATA cable, which means you would have to be careful to make sure the expansion did not accidentally come unplugged.

However, I am more than happy to pass your suggestion along to my engineers for future consideration. Your opinions and feedback are crucial for our development process, and we really appreciate everyone's input. Feel welcome to contact us any time.

Sincerely,
Andrea

Hello Andrea,

thanks for the info, can you let us know if there will be a dedicated expansion option for the DS412+ or what can you recommend ?
Is it possible to have same functionality as a DX510 has with a DS1512 with a esata drive?

thanks and look forward to next DSM releases and HW releases!

Does anyone know if the DS412+ would see all 5 drive bays on the DX510 or only 1 HDD? Thanks.

Hi,

I'am thinking about the DS412+ to. If you look at the Pictures of the back from DS412+ and DS1512 there is the same esata connector with screw holes on the left and right side. So why do you say the ds412+ does not have a esata lock??? The DS411 for example has a esata connector but no holes for screws.

Dear All,

Thanks for the reading and replies, I would really like to understand from Synology why this was not included. the Hardware of other DSxx12+ is the same as the DS412+. same controllers, software as well.
Maybe it has just a setting in DSM to disable this (marketing/product positioning reasons)

DID ANYBODY EVER TRY THE DX510/DX513 with DS412+ ?
DID ANYBODY DIVE INTO SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION OF DS412+ vs DS1512+ ?

Thanks!

I am sad to find this out as well. Would be great if it could be made officially compatible somehow or an expansion product were released.

It will work almost in the same way as 7/15/18XX+. drives will show up in the same way, but you can't have a volume over the DX and the DS. The DX will not power on with the DS after power lose.

All other DiskStation/RackStation models equipped with eSATA interface can still connect with Synology expansion units for backup or additional storage. Please caution the following:

This approach can only form independent volume on the expansion unit. It is not for expanding DiskStation/RackStation's internal volumes.

eSATA ports on these models may not have screw holes for proper fastening.

Synology expansion units cannot auto power up with DiskStation/RackStation not listed above.
