I've recently picked up a DS1812+ which I'm very happy with.
When setting up the Surveillance Station I notice some features are "missing"
compared to my dedicated DVR. I'm aware that Synology doesn't aspire the DS
to replace such a unit, but even so, it would be very nice features to have.
"Smart Recording"
Smart Recording records constantly with a very low framrate, 0.5 / 1 FPS
but when an event is triggered (motion, alarm, time, etc.) it records
at a set framrate, be it 5,10 FPS, or whatever you set it to.
You get the advantage of continous recording with the space saving benefit
of motion triggered recording.
"Motion Triggering"
Unless I have missed something, even though you can define 10 different zones
they all have the same sensitivity / threshold setting. It would be nice to be
able to define 2-3 different levels.
This isn't a very big deal as more advanced cameras have this setting built in.
"Pre / Post-recording"
In the event that you do not wish to have smart recording, or have cameras
with poor motion detection I'd like to see the ability to set longer pre/post
recordings than 30 seconds.
If you have a camera with poor motion detection, you may be foreced
to tune it down so it doesn't pick up shadows (from the trees as in my case)
but that means that it may or may not pick up a person walking around.
It will however pick up a car, so the car pulls into the driveway, person
stays in the car for 30+ seconds, my recording stops and I have no idea
what happened until the person jumps into the car and drives off.
Again, not a problem with cameras with good motion detection (like my Acti 1231)
but it is with low performance cameras (like my DLink 942).
Thanks for listening.
