Mounting a Windows shared folder

Postby vangrieg » Tue May 27, 2008 8:31 pm

How do I mount a Windows network share to a Synology NAS? Apparently, it doesn't have a samba client (smbmount doesn't work). Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks!

Try smbclient (smbclient is part of ipkg install samba).

Please elaborate on this solution. Does another pkg need to be installed or is the smbclient already available on the Synology box?

You need to have the optware installed (search the forum for optware topics!) and then you must install kernel-module-cifs using ipkg. Something like this:

Code: Select all
ipkg install kernel-module-cifs

Then you must insert the module:

Code: Select all
/sbin/insmod /opt/lib/modules/2.6.15/kernel/fs/cifs/cifs.ko

Then you can mount a share like this:

Code: Select all
mount //servername/sharename /mount/point -t cifs -o username=myusername,password=mypassword

If you'll be doing it a lot, yuo might want to put the "insmod" line somewhere in your /etc/rc.local so that it happens every time you boot. Hope this answers your question!

Hi baalamb!
This doesn't look like it works anymore, I tried your suggestion and got the following error:
Code: Select all
 >  /sbin/insmod /opt/lib/modules/2.6.15/kernel/fs/cifs/cifs.ko
insmod: cannot insert `/opt/lib/modules/2.6.15/kernel/fs/cifs/cifs.ko': Invalid module format (-1): Exec format error

My guess is that the kernel module is too old for my version of the Synology distro (uname -a shows 2.6.24), but
does anyone else have any other ideas/suggestions :?:

+1

I have a DS409 synology and there is not kernel-module-cifs on the ikpg for the DS 409.

I have installed samba 3, but it doesn't solve the issue (or i don't realy know how to use smbclient on the synology).

Anyone can help us, it's really driving me crazy as I spend hours on this.

Kind regards,
Emmanuel

and why the
Code: Select all
ipkg list | grep cifs

is saying
kernel-module-cifs - 2.6.15-1 - Synology e500 (Marvell mv5281) kernel module: cifs

where DS-209+II has CPU Freescale mpc8533 PPC Processor, not a 5281 !!!
also any other module or piece of software is listed as
Synology e500 (Marvell mv5281)

isn't this a source of a problem?
I loaded my bootstrap from the link from wiki -
Code: Select all

reply from synology support:
Dear Samuel,

Thanks for your message.

The kernel version of DS209+II is 2.6.24 instead of 2.6.15. We suggest you contact the 3rd-party program provider to build a new cifs.ko using 2.6.24 kernel for you. Otherwise, you can refer to the "Synology Disk Station 3rd-Party Apps Integration" to do it: http://www.synology.com/enu/support/3rd ... ration.php

If you have further questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Synology support again.

Best Regards,

Thanks for confirming that skroslak... :? It would be nice if this was prebuilt into the Syno distro.

I would try to compile it myself in a few days, when I'll have some free time, but I can't promise anything. My knowledge of compiling kernel modules is close to zero :(
If someone would like to do it, I would strongly appreciate that. I already contacted the yahoo group from which this module comes, but there seems to be no answer

Did you, or anyone else, ever get to compile this?

nope, I found solution, not involving synology NAS, so I don't fiddle with it anymore
