Tweaks Forum

Postby NetBoot » Fri Oct 27, 2006 6:35 pm

Any chance of adding some type of forum that users have done to tweak their Synology units?

How I enabled telnet and other tweaks that user where able to tweak using Synology's stock non modified firmware.

Thanks,

Net....

Have a look here:

In this yahoo group you get the answer for nearly every tweak (incl telnet).

Ideas for Linux Cron

Postby Kenny-M » Sat Nov 04, 2006 2:37 am

I have some ideas for cron jobs on the DS-101. I would like to
automatically generate reports on certain DS-101 parameters on a
routine basis. As I did under AIX and HP Unix.

The problem, I can't locate "synomail?". Maybe it's part of another
program but I would need it to generate email to the same name the mail
goes to for automatic backup massages.

Telnet to DS-101 and login then:

cd /

find / -name *mail -print

didn't turn anything up!

Anyone have experience using the mail function built into the DS-101?

Thanks...

I'm using a script that monitor hard drive temperature and every 24 hours, an email is sent to sum up the temperatures of the day. To send the mail the script's using esmtp ( make an "ipkg install esmtp" ). May be it could help you

I can not locate the "wemtp" package on the DS-101 2.0.1 - 3.03.72

Where can I get a copy of the compiled program?? As I am running the native operating that can with the DS-101

Is a preconfigured / precompiled version of esmtp availablw that will run under the native DS-101 OS.

If you could point me to esmtp either compiled or source I would appreciate.

I guess that telnet is enabled on your syno.
If it's not done you'll have to install the bootstrap wich will allow you to install ipk packages.

then install this package: http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optwa ... _armeb.ipk

Thanks for the info.

I do have a couple of questions. The download site you posted had two entries for esmtp that concerned me:

Package: esmtp
Version: 0.5.1-2
Depends: libesmtp <--- 1
Conflicts: postfix <--- 2

Then it went on to say "relay-only Mail Transfer Agent"?

What issues did you discover? You are using a DS-106 which I think has a different processor then a DS-101.

Is there any man or document page for this?

Thanks.

As i said, i'm using esmtp to send a message every night with my harddrive temperatures and have no problem.
Right, 101 and 106 haven't the same CPU but i gave you the link of the package for your CPU.

For more information about packages, the way additional software can be added and in order to avoid trouble, you can read the following site: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DS101/HomePage

I didn't heard of man pages sorry.

I haven't tweaked the box (yet) but I use Opera V9.02 to administer it. Just put Opera in to 'Identify as Internet Explorer' mode by clicking twice where the red 'O' is on the address bar and away you go..... no problems so far.

Ikeke,

You sent "I didn't heard of man pages sorry.".

Man pages are the way Unix documents commands online on the machine. Kind of like Windows help files. A much eariler concept. I first ran into man pages in 1975 when I was learning the Bell Labs version of the Unix System that was running on DEC PDP-11/45 and PDP-11/70 mini-computers. Mini, no, several big 6 foot cabinets with reel-to-reel tape and washing machine sized hard drives and Decwriters for terminal I/O... That was an expreience working on brand new concepts and almost daily system panic's and crashes. Back then you could "cat" a file to itself (append) 'cat junk >>junk' for example and use up ALL available disk space... Anyway that's old school.

Meaning: ManUAL pages

I am sure Linux has the same if loaded. For Example: man cron

Still concerned about "requirement" of mail in my previous message.

Yes i know what Man pages are
There 's a man module to read manpages that can be installed.
But when i told "I didn't heard of man pages sorry." i was talking about man pages for esmtp directly readable in the DiskStation. But you would probably find some on the internet.

I sent you a PM
