best harddisks to put in DS411?

Postby Jace » Thu Apr 19, 2012 3:14 pm

I plan to buy a solid, stable, trustworthy NAS, and considering the DS411 with 4 disks (to be used in raid 5).

The DS411 seems sufficient for my purposes, I'll be using it mainly for remote backups and large data storage, and don't really need fancy features.

Question: what harddisks should I pick? I'd like to use four disks of 2, 2.5, or 3 TB, in raid 5. I've read some scary reports of brand X or model Y (including well known brands and new models) not working properly in raid, or crashing prematurely due to extensive up & down spinning, etc. But I'm not sure what to look for. Price is not a major concern, I'd be happy to pay a bit more if that results in better stability.

Is one brand more suitable than another, are 3 TB disks typically more or less trustworth than 2 TB in this setup, and does 7200 vs 5400 rpm make any difference? (other than speed obviously, but the network/internet will be the bottleneck anyway, and overall stability is more important to me).
Without order nothing can exist. Without chaos nothing can evolve.

I am running 4 Hitachi (dont have the model at hand, but will post) 2TB 7200RPM drives right now in a SHR (aka R5) with no issues. Disk caching appears to be working on them as it will enable. As far as reliability, I actually repurposed these drives from my local machine that also had them in a RAID 5, so they are about a year old now and still running strong. One of the drives has some read errors, but thats what RAID is for...:-) ...

Def go for the 7200 drives if you can....
