4TB disks?

Postby RickL4 » Tue Jan 03, 2012 1:59 am

Should the new 4TB hard disks work with a DS410- at least in theory. If so, any guess as to the time frame they might be added to the approved list?

Thanks
Rick

I think from 'software' point of view, the main hurdle was to go beyond 2TB.
For moving from 3TB to 4TB, it may depend on hardware specs, like the power dissipation of the HDD.

Not completely sure about this, but is there a limit you can set a max volume size?
For example when using a 4 bay drive with only 3 x 3 TB could you set a max which is larger than what it currently holds or can you only increase that volume after you add the 4th drive?

I have a Drobo here (8 bay) which has fixed sizes for usage (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 TB) based on thin provisioning.

2x4TB DS212+

Postby nunoragil » Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:21 am

Hi,

I am thinking on buying a DS212+ and I would like to know if it supports 2x4TB disks in RAID-1 since in the specs it is mentioned that the maximum capacity is 2x3TB?

Thank you,

N.

They are available... at least now.
As of this writing, Amazon, Newegg and B&H Photo Video carries 4TB internal hard drives.

Newegg and B&H carries Hitachi while Amazon carries Seagate. Any plan to test these drives anytime soon?

synology 4TB support?

Postby NumeroUno » Mon Feb 06, 2012 7:35 am

Out of curiosity, will any of the synology 2011 NAS (like the ds2411 and ds3611) support the new 4tb drives?

Also has anyone heard of any new NAS with future support for this size of Hard drives.

With the way the 3tb prices have risen, I sure hope so.

Just my 2 cents ... there's nothing in a DiskStation that keeps it from supporting very large disks. The latest DSM uses ext4 file system and you can have disks much larger than 4 TB. The limit listed by Synology is just a matter of having tested it in practice. I personally appreciate this approach - no need for marketing drums to blow things out of proportions.

There has already been one person who has tested a Seagate 4 TB drive:

http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=127&t=43722

No indication of which Synology unit though it's DSM 3.2 from the looks of the screen shot. The bare 4 TB drive hasn't been formally released yet except as the internal mechanism in a GoFlex offering (ST4000DX000; GoFlex STAC4000100).

I received a communication from Synology support that they tested Seagate 4TB and is now listed in Hard drive compatibility page.

However I'm planning to buy the Hitachi 4 TB drives. No word on this one yet.

Hi Everyone
I am new to this forum, and have just purchased my first Synology (DS712+), so I hope I am posting this in the right thread.

I have installed two 4TB HDS5C4040ALE630 SATA drives and everything is working fine.
DSM version 3.2-1960

Support of 4TB disks on the 2411+ ?

Postby jrosado » Mon Feb 27, 2012 3:20 pm

Acording to the support tables at synology site, the new models (1812+, etc...) support 4TB drives. Even the DX510 expansion unit supports the 4TB drive. However the 2411+ does not list the 4TB drive as supported? Can it be a missing update at the tables?
