I used my DS212j to run the volume creation full test on my 2 Hitachi HDS724040ALA640 disks. The test of the 2 disks ran for over 40 hours before the volume was created. No problem was found, and the usable space (RAID 0) is about 7.4TB. The DS212j is running the DSM 4.0 beta.

Hi

All DS get support for newer disk's, with new DSM upgrade, some 4TB disk do fit, but haven't been tested yet.

So yes when the 4TB disk's are tested and found working then the comparability list is updated.

4TB compatibility?

Postby witchdoc » Fri Mar 30, 2012 9:14 pm

From searching I was unable to get a positive answer so here goes:

Currently the DS2411+ does not have any 4TB disks in its compatibility list.
So here's what I'd like to know.

Is there actually a (good) reason to think any 4TB disk might fail compatibility or is it simply because those disks have not yet been tested? As in: should those 4tb disks generally succeed the compatibility tests or does the Synology simply lack the necessary support for them?

Since no answer was forthcoming I bought 1 drive to test with and voila.. works without any problems.

Drive used:
Hitachi H3IK40003254SW
PN: 0S03364
Desc: Hitachio 3.5 4TB Coolspin IDK bulk pack WW)

Detected as:
HDS5C4040ALE630 datasheet.pdf

How to read the Deskstar model number
HDS5C4040ALE630 = 4TB/32MB buffer
H = Hitachi
D = Deskstar
S = Standard
5C = CoolSpin technology
40 = Full capacity — 4TB
40 = Capacity this model, 40 = 4TB
A = Generation code
L = 26.1mm z-height
E6 = SATA 6Gb/s
3 = 32MB buffer
0 = Reserved (2 = Reserved)

1 DS212 / 1 Samsung F4 HD204UI 2TB, powered 24h/day, 365 days/year on
Synology System 2:

I recently installed one of these in my DS1512+, and it's showing a SMART fail. If I go to the actual SMART attribute list, everything seems normal.

Should I RMA it, or am I getting a false positive? Any way to find out more info?

DS1812+ HDD 4TB Compatibility

Postby TechSource » Wed Jun 13, 2012 5:37 pm

They only list a couple non enterprise level drives. The drives that are listed are not in production yet! Is anyone using any Hitcahi Deskstar 4TB HDD that are not on their list? I need to know a compatible drive...

I'm using four of the Hitachi 7K4000 drives in my DS1512+, which are not enterprise drives, and have had no issues thus far.
