Which HDD For

Postby CarlosinFL » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:56 am

I just got a DS211+ and have the option to use a 2 TB 7200 RPM Seagate drive but I was wondering if instead I should use a 2 TB 5400 RPM Western Digital Green drive. Will I see better performance using the higher rated drives in the NAS or does that only work on a desktop / workstation configuration? Obviously the drives will be sleeping most of the time unless I'm uploading / downloading files but which would be the better drive if I have access to both?

Thanks for any info.

Hi Carlos,
I'm new here but I can tell you what I choose (and what I found by looking all over the forum and around...)
I just received my DS110j and 2TB drive this morning. Formatting right now, as I'm writing.

Why are you thinking about 7200rpm drive ??
I learnt it few weeks ago : there are 5900 rpm drives. :-)
Which seem to be the best choices for our NAS.

Like the one I chose : Seagate ST2000DL003
It's 2TB, Green drive. (meaning from the specifications : lower rotation speed, lower consumption, less noise, less consumption, but same speed for data)
A good review : http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_barracuda_green_2tb_review_st2000dl003

You also have the other from WD and Samsung.
My first NAS : a DS110j + 2TB Seagate ST2000DL003
(Hibernate after 4h, and OFF when I am not at home)
Router Belking wifi G, lan 100Mb (project: Gigabit, wifi N, UPS)

iMac 20" & MBPro 15" - OSX 10.6.6 (+ wife on Sony Vaio - WinXP)
Current usage : central file system for our pictures and documents (2 users on different OS) and back up with TimeMachine.
