Hitachi 3TB HDS723030ALA640 -- 3TB H3IK30003272SW

I'm documenting this just to help out the next person who might find this confusing.

Earlier this week, Synology qualified the Hitachi 3TB HDS723030ALA640 drive.

While shopping for this drive, I found this exact product model number on a couple of websites -- but I found a slightly different product model number on several other websites that offered attractive pricing (including NewEgg).

I called Hitachi for clarification -- and they told me that they only produced two - 3TB drives -- a desktop Deskstar version -- and an enterprise Ultrastar version.

Digging deeper, I found out that the alternate model number, which is H3IK30003272SW (0S03208) -- is exactly the same as the Synology-qualified drive -- but it is the "Internal Drive Kit" bundle -- which apparently includes mounting screws and a SATA cable.

So -- long story short -- I believe the H3IK30003272SW product advertised on a number of websites -- is identical to the HDS723030ALA640 drive qualified by Synology.

I have just ordered the NewEgg drive and will provide further comment -- if I find any actual differences.

...also, if you have a look at "Customer Reviews of the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies H3IK30003272SW" on the Newegg website there is a happy customer using a ds1511+ with 5 of those drives!

I received the New Egg Hitachi 3TB H3IK30003272SW drives today, and even though they did not arrive with screws or cables, the model number printed on the drive is HDS723030ALA640 -- which is the Synology-qualified model number.

Of course, this does not come as a surprise -- but it does close the case on this question.

Many, many thanks to those who posted here. My first drive choice was Hitachi. I could not find this approved drive at a decent price or from a vendor I know. NewEgg has the Hitachi kits that contain this drive in stock and at a good price.

On the description page for the H3IK30003272SW kit there are two pictures of the drive's back. You can magnify either picture and easily find the model number HDS723030ALA640.

In checking some other approved 3 TB drives I found a few surprises. Some of the Western Digital drives are green models with variable spindle speed and a 3 year warranty. One was a "surveillance" model, but I don't know how suitable that would be for a NAS. The Hitachi drive also has a 3 year warranty but it runs at 7200 RPM and is not touted as being "green".

The approved Seagate ST33000651AS drive has a 5 year warranty and probably needs it. There is a note on the Synology approved list that this drive should be used in an environment where it will operate below 30 degrees Celsius. More than one reviewer commented that the drives they bought ran quite hot.

Very soon I shall be setting up my new DS1511+ with three or four 3 TB drives. Many thanks again, one and all.

Anyone can confirm the source of this information?
At Seagate's web page the max operating temperature for this HDD is 60ºC:

I couldn't confirm this 30ºC limitation anywhere. To be fair, the only source for this information was the Synology's compatibility chart.

The 30C (86F) figure is the highest recommended room temperature for the Synology NAS device running with those Seagate drives installed. It is not the rating of the drives themselves.

The Seagate drives may be able to function at 60C (140F) but the Synology NAS may not be able to tolerate the heat they produce. If Synology has a caution about those drives running inside their box then I will have to defer to them.
