Hi jhunt, I feel your pain!
My BT router is supposedly supported, but the EZ Wizard didn't work with it at all. So I might have been tempted to recommend you buy a compatible router, but as my experience shows, it may not work.
Back on my TP Link, and for no apparent reason...it started to work. I was just clicking around, exasperated, using tools like "Open Port Check Tool" and others to see whether I had been successful or not in opening the port 5005 required for my to access using my iPhone. I noticed that this tool was automatically displaying an IP address that I didn't recognise. When I put in the 192. etc address, it was telling me the port was closed (I have never been too sure what IP address I am meant to be opening the port for - the router or the NAS?)
Anyway, I tried the IP address it was displaying to me (which was totally different from the NAS address and router address, it begins with 86 or something) in the log in field on the Synology app on my iphone and hey presto, it gave me access! I'm guessing this is some sort of external IP address?
However, I am still not sure how I opened the port. In the relevant section on the router settings, I just put in loads of lines with loads of different IP addresses, asking it to open port 5005.
Now what is really frustrating, I cannot reproduce that for any other ports.
I am trying to access my audio files using the DS Audio app on my iPhone and I believe to do that I need top open port 5000, but I cannot do it.
Additionally (or maybe related), when I enter the same login details on the DS Audio app I get a message about the password being invalid.
One other thing you need to know about which I have been advised on is setting up static IP addresses. I followed these instructions here:
http://portforward.com/networking/static-win7.htm(assuming you are on W7). You also need to set up a static IP address on the NAS and I believe you do this: go to Control panel > Network > Network Interface > "User Manual configuration" and enter the IP address.(Exactly what IP address I don't know/can't remember)
So I have made some progress, but not a lot.
It is so frustrating. There's bits of advice, Wiki pages, tutorials etc but none are comprehensive.
The other major problem I have is tediously slow file transfers. I see that many Diskstation owners have problems with both of thsese issues, many threads on various forums on both these topics are just left unanswered. there are so many variables. I have thought of ditching the Synology for another brand but I'm sure the same problems will exist.
There's another bit of a snag of course. While I can log into DS File, I cannot access DS Audio.
I get the message "Account or password is invalid. Please try again".
EDIT: I've also remembered this page here:
http://www.synology.com/us/support/tuto ... rnet.php#3It's a tutorial on how to open ports. It seems to suggest (about 70% of the way down) that you can use the DSM to open ports. Whether you need to do this as well as open them on your router, I don't know. I seem to recall playing around in there...I don't know, I've spent I would guess 40 hours on the problems and made next to no progress!
