I sucessfullly managed to have my 2*Samsung HD204UI 2To recognized in my DS211j, without patching the disks because they are dated 12/2010.

Here is a summary of tips and tricks I got from nbaner (thanks mate!) and some others, with web links that works

SUMMARY
1. Don't install the (unpatched) Samsung HD204UI on DS211 and power on/perform smart test!
2. IF FAB DATE OF HDD is >=12/2010 go to number 4! Made boot CD with Samsung patch using the .iso file made by HarryPotter, found in this thread on page 11: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=27905&start=150 Source fom Samsung (useless when using iso : http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=386)
3.Disconnect computer hard drive and connected the first Samsung hard drive, boot computer with above CD, apply patch, power off computer, and then repeat for second Samsung hard drive
(Note: While applying the patch once you see the successful message, you need to directly switch off PC from socket and not use any traditional shutdown method)
4. Install HD204UI first disk on Bay 1 of DS211. (The bay numbering is top down approach where top bay is bay 1 and bottom bay is bay 2).
5. Next through synology assistant install DSM3.0 (before doing that download the latest DSM version DSM3.0-1354 which is synology_88f6282_211_1354.pat available on synology download center.)
6. Reboot diskstation after DSM update.
7. Next download DS211 spin patch file synology_88f6282_211.pat through synology suppport link and update DSM. Here is the link that WORKS (login+pwd included) : ftp://on-line:online_user@ftp.synology.com/on-line/DSM3.0/spinup/
8. Reboot diskstation after update
9. Next install your second HD204UI disk on DS211
10. Once booted up you should be fine and then you can do your checks through disk manager and also do the smart tests
11. You might find the first disk in state initialized but not the second. But don't worry. When you create the volume using the second disk this disk will be first initialized during volume creation and then the volume created.
12. Once the volume is created on both disks you will see the status on both disks same.

I am know struggling to have my Ubuntu accesing the disks, but I think I will survive.
Thanks VERY much for your help, your time and your kindness.
I stay tuned, I am sure to have some questions soon...see ya!

So whats the difference between the patch synology_88f6282_211.pat and the synology_88f6282_211j.pat? Seems like most people have the DS211J but say that you should download the synology_88f6282_211.pat?? Is this correct or just a typo?

Anyway, with all data safe on Seagate I removed this drive and put Samsung (02.2011) in bay1 and second Samsung in bay2. Started up DS and I got degraded volume and "system partition failed" (or something similar) on bay1. I fixed this in a matter of seconds using "Store Manager > HDD Managment > Repair", so the Disk 1 received status Normal and Disk2 status Initialized. Then I started a repair volume process again and now I can just wait and hope, again ...

.... surprisingly now I have a fully working RAID1 volume with both Samsung HDDs installed. Don't know exactly why it works now, maybe it has something to do with in which bays are disk installed, before that (when I received crashed volumes) I had always Samsung (2010.12) in bay1 and the newer Samsung in bay2. Now (when it worked) I had Samsung (2010.12) in bay2 ... Or maybe it has somothing to do with rapairing partition table before repairing volume ... I really don't know ... Anyway, I'm glad that it now works, I hope it will stay that way for a long time ... Thanks for all your help!

I didn't reread all your posts, but did you apply the Synology patch yet? Running two (2) samsungs together IS what the patch is all about.... One won't spin up or something which produces a failed volume..... Apply the patch now if you haven't already....

I already patched before I had any problems with crashed volumes, so ...

I am considering buying some of these drives from Amazon. Does anyone know if the drives Amazon would be shipping would likely already have the fixed firmware from Samsung?

My new DS-411+ should be arriving tomorrow. If I load the newest version of DSM 3.0, do I still need to apply this spin-up patch? If so, what is the correct way to do this? Thanks!

I don't know about Amazon but, I have placed 2 orders with NewEgg over the past month for HD204UI drives and both times they sent me 2010-12 dated drives. Samsung says Dec 2010 and newer have already been patched. Those drives are working great for me in my DS1511+ and in one of my PC's.

As far as I know and learned from this topic you'll need the spin-up patch in DSM 3.0. But instead you can load DSM 3.1 beta. In that case you don't need to apply the patch.
So if you have Dec 2010 or newer drives and load DSM 3.1 beta you'll don't have to patch anything and your nas should be working ok then.

UPDATE:
I see that DSM 3.1 is officially released today.

I also got 2 F4s from NewEgg (last week) and both were 2010-12. I would assume that Amazon goes through their stock quickly and would have recent drives as well. I think both stores has free shipping on this drive.

My 411+ arrived today and I'll load DSM 3.1 on it. :)

DSM final 3.1 throws up an unexpected warning at first boot, automatically disabling write cache. I did the (invisible) Samsung update a few months ago or whatever. Any ideas? Just ignore? Was able to enable write cache again.

Oh and btw, one drive is still reading as "abnormal". Is this simply an old remnant?

Yeah, but can diskstation see if a drive is patched or not? Wasn't the flash completely invisible?

Thanks for your replies everyone. I got my 4 F4EGs in the mail today from Amazon and they all had build dates of 12.2010. Now I'm reading these reports about DSM 3.1 throwing up these errors and I'm a bit concerned. Everyone please continue to post your experiences here as I'm not quite sure what to do now!

I just put DSM3.1 on my new 411+ with new 2 F4s from 2010 12. I did not manually patch it. Is there anything I should watch out for?

Not really. Mine worked without a hitch.
You might want to run the full SMART test on both drives.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of it, but this is just a heads up for any interested in these drives. I received two more Samsung F4 drives about 30 minutes ago (this makes #6 and #7 for me)....

Upon inspection I noticed that Samsung has pulled a sneaky maneuver.... The firmware is still "Rev. A" but there's NO DATE on the drives now...

I called the US RMA exchange location (Total Tech Solutions in New Jersey, the company that sent me these replacement drives) to find out when my drives were manufactured. They were able to look up the SN and tell me they were mfg'd in Feb, 2011, but they checked their own stock and now they're concerned about the missing date. They'll be contacting Samsung in Korea to find out what's going on with the new labels. This is either a simple mistake, or Samsung is trying to cover up the "manufactured before x/x/x date" problem (i.e, anything before 12/10 is junk). Either way, it's somewhat surprising....
