Samsung Spinpoint F4EG HD204UI 2TB compatibility?

Samsung has just released their new EcoGreen F4 series including the 2TB HD204UI HDD which will probably be a popular HDD for Synology products. When can we expect a test of the drive to confirm compatiblity with the different Synology products?

Actually I'm not sure I do Does it mean that the drive has been tested and found to be incompatible with the DS or that it hasn't been tested yet and we don't know if it will be compatible with the DS? (I would expect the latter since it's a brand new drive)

I asked Synology support for HD204UI a few days ago. I also asked about mixing HD203WI and HD204UI in one DS.

I get the answer this morning as following:

Currently this disk is under our testing list and we will purchase it to verify it. Once it's tested we will announce its compatibility. You could subscribe Synology eNews to get the latest update to this kind of news.

Suppose it's supported, you could use this kind of disks working with 203WI disks.

BTW: As you probably know, F4EG have 667GB platters instead 512GB in F3EG. It means HD204UI will have 3 platters only instead 4 platters in HD203WI. It looks it can be more silent and more cool then not so silent previous F3 model - HD203WI.

There is info about acoustics (HD204UI vs. HD203WI):
Idle.................... 2.5/2.6 Bel vs. 2.7 Bel
Performance Seek... 2.8/2.9 Bel vs. 3.1 Bel

It's a little bit more silent for sure.

As you probably know, F4EG have 667GB platters instead 512GB in F3EG. It means HD204UI will have 3 platters only instead 4 platters in HD203WI. It looks it can be more silent and more cool then not so silent previous F3 model - HD203WI.

The new HD204UI seems to be a good choice since it's cheaper, faster, more silent and uses less power than it's predecessor - win-win - IF it works

Is there any update on this? I got two of these drives and put them in my DS207. When I boot my ds207 I get the blinking yellow light...which is no good. Any recommendations on getting this to work?

Would love to see an update on this as well from Synology as well, if even it's "we're nowhere close to getting to testing this drive." There aren't very many choices out there in the 2tb range and the previous model of the Samsung drive is hard to find now that the newer rev has been released.

I put the drives in and got yellow lights. So I returned them to newegg and got two more drives off the approved list for the ds207. I put those drives in and got flashing lights too. I had to reinstall the DS207 OS in order for the drives to work. That may of been the case with the Samsung drives too, but I returned them too fast.

I think the difference between the two models might be something with 4Kb sector size - and some emulation as well... - really don't have any idea what this might be useful for but read somewhere that it's what caused problems for another hdd manufacturer on an earlier occasion...

i have 2 hd203wi, in raid 1 on ds410 dsm3.0, and added 2 new hd204ui for a raid 5 and happy to report there's no problems so far!

I am using a single Samsung Spinpoint F4EG HD204UI 2TB in my DS209.

no problems to report so far it is working fine with both DSM 2.3 and the new 3.0 beta.

So, what you guys are telling me is that I can migrate my 5xSamsung HD103UJ (1TB) drives in Raid 5 on a DS509+ to the new HD204UI drives without any complications? Sweet.

I guess I need to replace one drive at a time, wait for it to sync before I do the next and then do an expand when all drives are switched.. I wonder how long that will take? Since I've used up all 4TB.
