As you can see on my signature, I put a Seagate ST31000340AS 1TB HDD (FW SD1A) into my DS-106x (FW 731).

I filled it with about 700 GB of data. No issues so far, silent and perfect hibernation.

I have an external fan attached, using the thermal switch (about 30 degrees off, 40 degrees on) solution described here.
With 1 fan running, temp. is about 36 degrees under heavy use (same temp. as in the DS408).

Very satisfied so far.

Did you update the HDD FW or did you get a newer one with (hopefully working) FW?

Are you using the original DS-106x PS, or a beefier one?

What external fan do you use, and how is it connected?

Yes I updated the HDD FW from SD15 to SD1A

Yes, I am still using the original PS model DSA-0421S-12 2

I have installed 2 Papst SilenX iXtrema PRO 120mm 11dBA (830600) using the 12V feed from the power supply (see viewtopic.php?p=3754#p3754)

The 36 degrees are with only one fan running.

Hi

Is there any specific reason why the 1.5TB SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS is not compatible with x07 devices but it is for x08/x09? Is it that it was just not tested or anything else, e.g. hardware incompatibilty?
I want to use one (with latest firmware on it) in combination with my 107+. According to the user compatibilty list, it works with e.g an 207+...
What could be possible complications?

Thanks and Regards
oswatil

the problems are the power this HDD need and the heat they create.

Re: Compatible Harddrives

Postby dho » Tue Jan 27, 2009 4:06 pm

Hi, I put 4 x Seagate 1.5TB(CC1H) into my CS-406 with 0728 firmware and created a RAID5 two weeks ago. I threw ~2TBof data into it and it works just fine so far. But according to the compatibility list, CS-406 supports hard drives up to 500GB only when 4 drives are all installed.

I would like to know if there is any compatibility issue in the official test and whether there is any risk with 4 x >500GB HDD installed in a CS-406. Thanks a lot!

Best Regards,

dho

Greetings dho

You will begin to experience random RAID errors due to

1. The Seagate. 11 hardware compatibility issue (which affects x07 products)
2. That the Seagate .11 drives will consume more power than what the CS-406 can provide

The CS-406 officially has enough power for 4x500GB HDDs - if you exceed this capacity, then HDD will begin to randomly drop, especially during waking up from Hibernation.

The hardware compatibility issue cannot be resolved on your system.

Hope this helps

Re: Compatible Harddrives

Postby jnmen » Thu Jan 29, 2009 7:21 am

Based on the discussions in the various threads I'm not getting a clear picture on which harddisk to buy. I urgently need a new HD of at least 1 TB in my DS207+. The only ones that are OK according to the official compatibility list are the ones from WD but based on the discussions (viewforum.php?f=124) they also don't seem to be a good choice.

Who can advice me ons this?

Hi,

My humble contribution to the list of harddrives.

External
LaCie 250 GB, USB2, DS-106e, FW426 (?) and 518, hibernates. Used for almost a year, FAT-format.

WD Essential series, 1 TB, DS-209+ (yes, I finally got it!), FW731, used for a couple of days, hibernates.

Internal:
Samsung 502IJ, used in 106e for months on end, various FW, no problems.
same disk type in 209+, FW731, only one disk in my box. (currently no need for more space, and I bought the HD based on my experience in the 106e.

Hi
Another couple of disks that seem to work well in CS407 DSM 2.0-0728

2 x Samsung Spinpoint HD502IJ 500Mb as Volume 1 Raid 1 . These run at about 31C but don't appear to hibernate
2 x Maxtor 6L200M0 200Mb as Volume 2 Raid 2. These run at a hot 35C and definitely don't hibernate

WD My Book ES 500Mb USD as backup device to the CS407 formatted native. Just plugged it in so don't know yet if it hibernates.

Regards
Chris
Kind regards
Chris

Chris,

We seem to have the same Samsung 502IJ drives, but mine hibernate.

Try to set the hibernate timer to something short (say, 10 or 20 minutes), and disconnect the LAN cable.

I know the idea with a NAS is gone withouit LAN, but in some networks, LAN traffic keeps the DS "awake".
This is a way to see if it's internally in the DS or something from the LAN whick prevents hibernation.

I believe the LAN traffic and hibernation issue has been covered elsewhere on this forum, but try this to begin your fault-finding.

Are these 7200rpm HDDs? Will I be able to use higher capacity 5400rpm discs, since they consume less power?

Like the Western Digital GP series for example, 4TB would be nice to have.

Yesterday I opened up my 1TB WD Mybook and took out the 1TB Low power Green marked Sata HD and mounted it inside my Synology 106e. Everything went well and I installed it with the latest firmware patch available (0731). The drive is now running smoothly and it reported it to be 900 and something Gb's (almost 1Tb).

But, Today I am looking at the harddrive compatible list for my 106e, and it says that 106e doesn't support higher than 750Gb... ?!?

So, what am I to expect.... HD failure or could this be no problem at all.. Why does the list say that 106e can't support 1TB discs?
