Does Synology NAS support HDD with Advanced Format?

Postby Baikal » Tue May 04, 2010 2:39 pm

I plan to install Western Digital WD15EARS into 110j.
Does this HDD supported?
How does this feature (Advanced Format) influence on read/write speed?

I have the same question which was not probably understood by HarryPotter! This is not about support of certain model of the hard drive but generally if the Linux installed on the Synology products is capable to recognize that an Advanced Formatted drive was inserted and format it accordingly. It means align partitions to the internal 4KB sector boundaries of the drive. See http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5655 for details.

Can somebody answer this question? It is also important for the future because as far as I understand all new drives are going to be "Advanced formatted" in the future.

If I remember correctly, support for 'Advanced Format' has been introduced with DSM 2.3,
meaning that the NAS can format correctly the harddisk using 4k format blocks.
I remember I've seen probably on this forum some tests that were showing a sensible
performance difference for a AF-able :) disk between 'old' and 'new' format.

The WDC page recommends Linux kernels 2.6.31 or newer (or better 2.6.34).
Currently DSM 3.0 beta has kernel 2.6.32 so most of the support is there,
and current DSM 2.3 should be something like 2.6.26
(see also https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/A ... nux_stands )
DS-411 (DSM 4.2-3202) w/ 2x WD10EFRX + 1x HD154UI
