I got my DS1010
the other day and have been searching the web for some reliable, cost effective and low power 2TB drives. I have narrowed the search down to
1. Samsung 2TB HD203WI Spinpoint F3EG 32MB (http://www.pcmeal.com.au/storage-memory ... 11231.html
2. Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB 64MB (http://www.pcmeal.com.au/storage-memory ... /8918.html
Both appear to be compatible with the DS1010
+ however there is a clause about some weirdness with the WD (WD20EARS-00S8B18 - To use this hard drive, we suggest that you reinstall the system with DSM 2.2-0965 or onward first, then reformat the HDD to adopt the WD Advanced Format Technology. According to our experience, WD15EARS and WD10EARS should have the same compatibility to our products as WD20EARS.)
I've got the latest DSM (2.3?) so should be fine on that front. However what is meant by reformatting the HDD to adapot the WD Advanced Format Technology - how is this achieved? Can anyone enlighten me please?
I'm leaning towards the samsung as there appear to be no issues with the drives according to Synology, however they are $20 more than the WD.
So my question is what is the best drive after considering cost/reliability/power usage/performance? Can anyone vouch for either of these 2 drives?
