Sorry for the delay.
So far so good. I have seven (7) "0355" Hitachi 4tb 7200rpm (64mg cache) drives in my DS1812+ right now. It is building the SHR as we speak and seems to be cruising right along. I will update again if i run into any issues. Ill post up some further details and bandwidth numbers after the array is built and i get some stuff moved over.

Hello,

I would like to know if the new WD RED HD WD30EFRX is compatible with our synology Nas.

On the WD web site here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810 you can see that this new HD is compatible but i would like to have the synology answer.

If someone had already tested this HD let me know

Thanks.

Interesting. So now we have also the "WD Red" product line, made especially for small NAS.
On WD website there is also a comment from Synology CEO:
Synology® is thrilled to be teaming up with WD to offer customers a reliable storage solution featuring WD Red NAS hard drives, which are optimized for consumer NAS systems.

so I think it won't take long before we'll see them on the list.

Great! Do let us know how you get on with them :)

I do hope WD has rid that Intelli-park feature from the Green line, which would be detrimental and stupid to implement in a NAS environment.

Hi all

I'm extremely new to this, as in I just bought a DS212J which is hopefully winging its way to me for delivery tomorrow or Wednesday. (After spending nearly a whole year debating investing in a NAS!)

All sounds great, except for the fact that I didn't buy the HDDs yet as I thought I'd give myself a little more time to make sure I made the right purchase... only problem is I'm drowning in a sea of counter recommendations etc. and don't know where to start :-/ - that's where I'm hoping you guys can help using your experience...

I've currently got a 1.5TB Seagate drive that came inside a faulty USB Seagate Expansion drive (click of death and slow read times etc) - I think removing it from the enclosure seems to have resolved the issue (ie the problem is with the usb adapter and not the drive), but confidence in the brand has obviously been affected, so I'm thinking I should probably invest in new drives and maybe keep this one to back up important stuff from the NAS from time to time.

I've done some reading on RAID configurations and it seems sensible to make use of this on my NAS to provide resilience etc. but again, I am very new to this, so please do tell me if I've missed the point a bit.

With that in mind, I'm thinking of two 2TB (or maybe larger if funds allow) drives and Amazon and ebuyer both suggest the WD20EARX(Western Digital 2TB SATA 6Gbps Power Saving Internal Hard Drive OEM - Caviar Green) as a drive shoppers have bought alongside the DS212j. However, I've seen mixed reviews about performance and advice regarding consideration to Desktop vs Enterprise drives, as well as new NAS drives etc etc and am at a bit of a loss as to which to go for.

Primarily I want to use the NAS for streaming (to PS3 etc) and storage/backup for our laptops etc. Although, I don't particularly want to preclude anything with my decision as I'm sure that I'll soon be exploring and dabbling with the other functionality!

Any advice/guidance/recommendations greatly received, as I'm currently on track to receive the enclosure with no drives, which won't be much fun, lol!

Thanks loads!

Just to add that I've seen the WD Red drives (in particular WD20EFRX) are available and designed for NAS. Is this a new addition to the Desktop vs. Enterprise discussion and now a good option for these devices? It doesn't seem too much pricier than the Green either...

It seems to me that this Red line looks quite much like "Green line, NAS Edition"
Advantages over Green drives are:
- no worries about LCC counter / WDIDLE tool, as that counter is disabled
- disks are qualified for 24/7 service (greens are designed for ~8h/day usage)
- longer warranty

StorageReview has published a review where the disk is tested with several Synology stations:

fadihu - not yet I'm afraid, only just received the drives today. I'll let you know.

I must admint, being new to all this, I'm a little concerned by some of the comments elsewhere online regarding the issues with even having a RAID array (bit rot, timeouts, corruption etc. leading to RAID rebuild errors and data loss)....

Before I set up my DS212j with 2x 3TB WD Red in a RAID 1 or SHR configuration, should I consider any alternatives or just avoid RAID altogether etc etc?

Never really had issues with desktop drives before, so not sure how likely etc...

Thanks,
Bob

So I had ordered a DS 1812+ last week, and as I was looking for the HDs I ran across the articles about the Reds. Started the search and realized that Newegg had them in stock (3TB) I went ahead and ordered 3 to start with. I've now had them up and running for a little over 5 days, and so far so good. They are very quiet, have good performance, w/ just 3 I'm seeing 110MB/s - 116 MB/s (as measured by the DSM resource monitor.) I'm upgrading from a ReadyNAS NV+ and I've never seen speeds close to this so I'm very pleased. I'll probably pick up 1-2 Reds a month until I have the NAS filled up. They are significantly quieter than the Seagates I have in my ReadyNAS which made quite a bit of noise when you first woke the NAS up. Not much of a review, but I've only had them for 5 days.

Hi Dano,

Which Seagate HDDs did you have in the ReadyNAS?

Even though I prefer WD HDDs I bought 4 Seagate ST3000DM001 HDDs because every review said that they were quiet and performed well. But I was disappointed by the Seagates' start up noise and head noise. They are very quiet compared to Seagates and Maxtors from a decade ago but they are noisier than most WD HDDs I've owned.

I'm about to replace these 'noisy' 8hr/day Seagate HDDs with some WD Reds and your comments on noise are encouraging.

Even if the reds aren't almost silent I'll at least have 24hr/day RAID HDDs in my DS1812+ and 4x 3TB Seagates for backups.

thanks
Dave
