Which harddrives for DS412+

Postby Giffel » Wed May 16, 2012 7:53 am

Hi,

I have decided to buy the DS412+ and want to put 4x3TB disks in, my question is which harddrives would you recommend? I will be using the DS412+ as a mediaserver/downloader.

If you do a search here, you will find your question several times.

Everyone has an opinion/reason/preferece which honestly will not really help in yor choice I'm afraid, example viewtopic.php?f=26&t=51438

These are the drives I'm using in my DS1512+. I've had no problems with them and they're very quiet. Originally, I was going to use four in a DS412+ in a RAID 5 for 8.2 TB total, but because they're not enterprise grade (costing 2.5 times as much), I went ahead and got the DS1512+ and used five in a RAID 6 for the same 8.2 TB total with two disk redundancy.
DS 1512+ w/3GB, 5 x 3TB Seagate ST3000DM001 8.2TB RAID 6, half files/half Time Machine.
Icy Dock MB559U3S-1SB enclosure w/4TB Hitachi UltraStar via USB 3 for files backup
UVERSE to AirPort Extreme + 2 AirPort Express w/speakers. TRENDnet TV-IP312WN camera
CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD Sine Wave UPS
DSM 4.1-2661 w/SSH + SFTP, VPN Server, Syslog Server, Media Server, Mail Server, Mail Station,
Audio Station, Surveillance Station, Photo Station, Web Station - DS Apps on iPad & iPod Touch.

Same here, I never get the enterprise version, I rather swap them for bigger ones 1 or 2 years later and still save money. I stick to WD however.

I have been looking at the Western Digital AV-GP WD30EURS: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=150

And it is not a concern that it is only 5400RPM?

'only' is relative, you probably will not even notice for you purposes. They will still be a lot faster than your downloader ;)
