Backup DNS server

Postby bglabuser » Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:30 pm

I noticed that under network settings you cannot specify more than one DNS server. Will this be implemented soon?

We have our DS2411+ joined to our domain with DC-01 as the DNS server. When we shutdown the DC-01 for maintenance we loose connectivity to the shares because it cannot authenitcate to AD an longer.

We tried to specifiy a different DNS server DC-02 in the network configuration, but it seems that the synology is "locked-on" to DC-01.

Any idea what is causing this, or if a new version of DSM will support multiple DNS servers?

good point, this does seem like a limitation. I dont really see why there isnt an option to add a second DNS server.

if you log in to the cli with as root you could always edit you /etc/resolv.conf file and add a second line underneath the one that is already there. Eg:

nameserver 203.54.1.20
nameserver 203.54.1.21

The problem is that on the AD page there is an option there to set a DNS server for AD lookups so the box may ignore the standard resolv.conf settings. If I get round to testing it I will let you know.

Has anyone gotten a chance to try this? If so does it work.
Remember: RAID is not a replacement for backups
