Wordpress performance

Postby Rancid » Mon May 23, 2011 5:16 pm

Hi All.

can i ask for some feedback on the performance of my Wordpress blog.
Now i didn't originally buy my DS211J to host a blog and i have no complaints at all about the unit.
but sometimes it can take 4/5 seconds (seems longer) to lead a page.
it seems once its loaded a page or two its all a bit quicker.

blog is here
not here any more
(just to avoid confusion i have removed the URL as the blog now resides on a different server)
running WP Version 3.1.2

any advice on how to make it a bit more speedy ?
has anyone tried one of the WP cache programs ?
i installed one and it didn't seem to make much difference.

Cheers
Cid.

I have just looked around your site and it seems to run fine and fairly quick!!
I have a 30/3 MB connection. What are the connection you have used in the test?
Do you use sleep-functions on your DS?

i have a 50/5 connection.
i have not changed any of the sleep functions of the unit.

maybe i'm just being overly critical of the unit.

Install cache plugin to WP like W3 Total Cache or QuickCache.

Use Hyper Cache. It is especially for low resources web server (slow cpu or less memory). Here is the URL http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/hyper-cache/
I have been using it for almost a week and seem pretty good.
NOTE: Don't use web station together with download station.

Hi Cid. I don't know what changes, if any, you have made to your config, but your wordpress installation loads impressively fast for me.

Cheers,

Hi Rancid

Did you install a Wordpress cache?

As I see your page it loads fast without any problems.

I'm on a 20/20 fiber.

Sorry to report that i moved the WP blog off the DS..
the performance was just too slow.
instead i'm using a 1.86ghz Intel macmini i had spare as a LAMP/Centos server.
to be fair its got far more memory and far more CPU power.

I'd like to re-open this discussion on Wordpress performance. I'm seeing slow page loads and admin access when running Wordpress (latest build) and Download Station at the same time. I have installed QuickCache as suggested earlier in this thread, which has improved things slightly, but still not seeing the performance I expect from my DS211j (3.2 release FW).

What I want to know is whats causing the issue. Is it poor MySQL performance (non MySQL sites load VERY fast) or an actual conflict between Web Station and Download Station?

Any insight into a solution would be most helpful... Maybe a comment form a Synology would be helpful. :)

So WordPress runs acceptably on your unit when Download Station has been stopped?

On the WordPress side, have you done anything to optimize your installation outside of running a cache plugin? Do you need all the plugins you're using?

On the Download Station side, how many concurrent tasks do you have Download Station set for? What happens when you change that number downwards? What are the DL/UL speeds that you've set?

Yes, having download station off makes Wordpress (or should I say MySQL) work acceptably.

On the Wordpress side its the basic install, no additional plugins, not a complex MySQL DB in fact just the demo content.

Just the fact that download station in on at the same time as web station grinds Wordpress to a halt, I don't have to be downloading anything for it to become un responsive.

I don't think its a Wordpress issue but more a MySQL issues as I've tried it with other CMS's that rely on MySQL.

Any MySQL gurus out there that can help? better still an official comment from Synology? :)

No experton the matter, but this was my feelings exactly.
static HTML pages load up just fine....
Always felt it was a MySql performance issue.

Not sure if its down to the speed of the CPU in the 211j but i suspect there's more to it than that.

I am experiencing the same kind of issues with a DS1010+ and posted a message about it.

When I check the CPU load with the built in resource monitor I can't see the proc activity exceeding 30% and the busy RAM stays constant at 25%.

Either there's a setting I haven't seen in the my.cnf forbidding MySQL to ask for the resources it would need to run seamlessly or the Synology is limiting CPU usage from apps not directly related to network storage and file sharing ?

I have been running a 1511+ up from a 212 for a few years and always seem to run into website performance issues after a while. Here's what I've found helps the most:

If your wordpress website has slowed down significantly over a period of you probably need to optimize your mysql database. You can add phpmyadmin (from synology apps) and do this.

Website ruins fast after a reboot but slows down after a few hours or a few days of running? I found that configuring apache is necessary for most of the units. I'd suggest messing around with the mpm worker settings like maxrequestsperchild and maxclients.

I'm struggling with poor Wordpress performance too. One of the reasons I bought my DS112 was for the Web Station possibilities, since I'm doing soms Wordpress design for friends. The performance is so slow, that it's almost impossible to work with... Everything runs smooth, except Wordpress installs (I didn't test any other MySQL applications).

I just disabled Download Station, to see if this gives better performance. It looks a bit faster at first glance... but any more insights in how to tune the Synology for best Wordpress performance would be greatly appreciated.
