Thumbnail Creation

Postby benjibarnicals » Fri Mar 09, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi,

Just upgraded from DSM3.2-1955, and the synomkthumbd, synothumb and synoindex are maxing the CPU, is there any reason this is running? I thought all the thumbnails that were created under the previous DSM would be ok. Are there new thumbnails on this version that need creating?

I have a lot of high res photography, so I usually upload the images via the DS Assistant to help processing power, would be a shame if all that was pointless!

Cheers,

Ben

It will be for a short period of time, I was in the same situation and after leaving it for the night in the morning the process finished and the CPU was back to idle.

Any update on this please?

I am concerned about the upgrade from DSM 3.2 with respect to Photo Station. If it is going to demand to recreate all my Thumbnails again, then I think I will not put Photo Station back on.

I always use Synology Assistant to upload my photos. However, looking at so many of the threads on this forum it would seem that the Thumbnail creation causes many problems for people and is one of the weaker points with Photo Station.

Do you roughly know how many photos you have loaded on your nas?
I've got 20,00 plus at an estimate. Worried how long my DS211 is going to be re-indexing for :?

Well from what I found on mine (DS409) I left it running over night, so probably around 12/16 hours before i checked it again and it was ok. It wasn't converting any pictures from what I could tell, instead it was re-indexing the media. If you were upgrading from 3.3 then I think you'll be fine, I think if you had the previous DSM (3.2 <) then you might have to have thumbnails re-generated (can someone confirm this?).

I have about 25k+ photos, it will not reindex from 0, just some kind of update. 12hrs or something.

I'm running the same firmware as the op. 3.2 1955.
Sounds like it may well take a while.
I wonder what they did in 3.3 (which I didn't realise had been released), to prevent the thumbnail process running after every new version release?
Can anyone confirm this?
3.3 to 4 = no thumbnail recreation
3.2 to 4 = thumbnail recreation could take days...

I must say this issue is actually putting me off running the upgrade.
But if this will be fixed in future releases I suppose it running this once will be worth it.
It does kind of defeat the object of using ds assistant to upload the photos to save time in the first place. To then have to wait days for a re-index after installing a new firmware release.

Hi Bob,

I'd say run the upgrade, for the few hours or so it takes to re-index it's worth doing, let it do it's thing, you'll have to do it at somepoint if you want to upgrade.

...just for encouragement:

I currently have 20.853 photos (26 GB) on my DS211 (just checked :)
I remember that it initially took more than a week to convert.

However, "re-indexing" or whatever after updating from the latest 3.? to 4.0 took less than 12h. And I think there are really some nice improvements in the new DSM!

Well, I decided to bite the bullet and do the upgrade.
I applied DSM 4.0-2198 at 6pm, fearing the worst.
Imagining that the nas would be re-thumbnailing for days on end.
Left it re-indexing the media files.
Checked it at 10.30 pm and it has finished already! :D
I updated PhotoStation after logging in and it's all working OK.
Can use DSphoto+ on my iphone no problems.

So, to confirm DSM 3.2-1955 upgrade to DSM 4.0-2198 it does not have to create new thumbnails!

I have just started a re-index for the hell of it to see what happens!
