Note that the blinking blue Power LED is a sign of possible mainboard failure only if the DiskStation has been booted WITHOUT disks.
In your case it can well be that booting phase (and more likely shutdown) got stuck at some point.
Do you have un-official software installed, like optware packages?

I've removed all the hard drives and tried starting up again, but the same thing happens. So I suspect mainboard failure. :-( And as far as I know, I have no unsupported software installed. Only synology approved packages.

Thats the thing, I have removed all disks and have a blinking blue light, no beeps are heard. I have tried holding the reset button with no hard disks, but It just keeps blinking. I have also tried a wiped sata drive that is on the supported list, and nothing.

Re: DS511+ will not upgrade to DSM 4.0-2198

Both Methods will either timeout on the Status or sit there with "Transferring data to server . Please wait" for a coupe of hours unit I close the window. The download file only lasted about 5 Minutes or less to my PC.

I have tried shutting down the DS511+ and rebooting , Still with the same results.

Any Help would be helpful.

I have found a workaround for the timeout issue as I'm Australia I think that Asia download server is not working as if I try to download the file from Asia I get timeouts as I'm downloading the file. As the is noway to say which server to get the download from. I did a quick test which worked IE I'm now running DSM 4.0.

1. Goto the Control Panel

2. Under the System section select "Regional Setting/Options"

3. Change Timezone option to "(GMT=06:00) Central America Standard Time)"

4. Click Apply

5. Goto the Control Panel

6. Under the System section select DSM Update

7. Under the Status which shows that there is an update

8. Click the update/start (Can't remember the name but it's blue in colour) {Someone maybe able tell us what it is}

9. Now wait for the down (which mine took about 5 min)

10. Now click on the "start" to start the upgrade

11. Now wait it takes about 500 secs you with see the progress window

12. The Unit Reboots

13. Log back into unit

14 Goto the Control Panel

15. Under the System section select "Regional Setting/Options"

16. Change Timezone option to Timezone that you are in.

17 Click apply

18 Now you are done enjoy the new version.

I hope this helps someone with their problem.

(As I did most of the above step from memory after I have done my upgrade I may of miss steps or instructions / naming )

Re: Upgrade failed

Postby cve01 » Mon Mar 12, 2012 9:27 pm

I have tried to start the unit with no HD installed. The same thing happens. The power led keeps blinking blue and the HD leds keep blinking orange.

I have even removed the CMOS battery for 5 minutes, but no luck. Something must have gone wrong with the updating process or the mainboard gave way. In any case, my unit is just over 25 months old, so not under warranty anymore.

I have raised a ticket on Saturday afternoon GMT+1, but still no answer.

- removed all disks

Now everything is up and running, all my data is there as well as all my settings.

gorrus, can you specify the synology model? Was your previous setup (before the update) a RAID? With how many disks?

I have a 409+ in the same situation, but I'm panicking about the possible data loss!

Thanks a lot

Re: Upgrade failed

I have the same with my DS409 after upgrading to DSM_DS409_2198.
After upgrading to DSM_DS409_2198 the powerbutton blinks blue and the network light blinks. All harddisk lights are orange and every +/- 15 seconds the unit seems to ?reboot? Then the hdd lights and network light go out for 2 seconds and the FAN spins up for 2 seconds.
The DS assistant cannot find the drive anymore.

After removing the power the problem stays the same
I removed all drives and inserted a new drive but I keep the same problem.

There are no external drives connected to the unit.

Nothing worked to solve it, removed all drives, inserted only a new drive. held the reset button for 10 seconds etc.

Filed a support ticket at Synology. Lets wait what they say but I'm afraid I can throw the unit away! In that case, no more synology for me! :-(

I received a response from Synology yesterday. My DS-409 motherboard is defective because of the upgrade to version 4.0.

When I referred to all the other users who damaged their motherboard because of installing the latest official Synology firmware they answered that there were indeed some problems with upgrading and defective motherboards but "of course" not with my DS-409 model.......

No more Synology for me!
€360 euro down the drain!!

Today I finally found the time to investigate why the DS209+II upgrade to DSM 4.0 failed some months ago. I opened the box and connected a serial cable to the console port (JP1) on it's main board.
The serial console showed a message that the magic number of the ram-disk image that is stored in flash was invalid and because of that the boot process started over and over again. When the DiskStation starts it loads the kernel and a ram-disk image from flash and starts up.
This ram-disk image is inside the .pat file and called rd.bin.
The kernel is loaded in flash at 0xFFC00000 and the image at 0xFFE00000. The Synology boots with the command 'bootm FFC00000 FFE00000 FFF90000'.
I did the following:
- Interrupted the boot process of the DiskStation.
- Extracted the rd.bin file to a tftp-server.
- Loaded the ram disk image from the tftp-server to memory with the command 'tftpboot 0x800000 rd.bin'.
- Now I booted the Synology with the command: 'bootm FFC00000 800000 FFF90000'.

Now the DiskStation booted without a problem.
Next step was to redo the firmware upgrade because the image stored in flash was still damaged. This time the upgrade went well and the correct ram disk image was written to flash.

The DiskStation is fully functional again.

See this page: http://www.netbsd.org/ports/sandpoint/instSynology.html

You'll need a converter for connecting the serial console.
