Share folder with multiple users

Postby roeiegans » Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:54 am

I would like to share a specific cloudstation folder between multiple users. I have 8 users in a projectteam which now use Dropbox for syncing and sharing files. However Dropbox has a limit of 2Gb and that limit is nearing.

Directly give a user access rights to other users (home-)folders isn't possible, right? What I thought of is to create a new user and let all 8 users use this account for connecting with cloudstation. Will this work or is there a limitation to the number of PC's that can simultaniuosly connect to the same folder?

Another problem would be, that these 8 users use Filestation and FTP sometimes as well. However if they log on with their own accounts, they won't see the home folder of the user created for cloudstation, right? Anyone a workaround for that? Can I take another folder (not a home folder) for syncing?

Hi,

It is my understanding, that you cannot change the folder used for syncing on the NAS.
It's always [user]/CloudStation.

There should be no restriction (to my knowledge) on how many clients can connect to/with the same user account.

With regards to the use of FTP and FileStation, you should be able to allow the users to see/modify the home folder of the CloudStation user. A usergroup could be helpfull to achieve this.
Simply create a usergroup for the project, and let the different user be part of this group. Then, set the usergroup with read/write rights to the homefolder of the CloudStation user.

I hope it makes sense :)

I'm not sure letting multiple computers sign on with the same account would work. When I did this the CloudStation would continuously update the version of the file/folder on the two computers (seemingly without end). I think it's a bug where it thinks that the same user is adding but removing the same files over and over again.

Can anyone else verify this?
There should be a "Share Folder" function like Dropbox has.

The DiskStation supports shared folders. If not all users should have access to one, use Control Panel -> Groups to create a group of users who should have access, i.e. accounting, marketing, etc. Give members of this group appropriate privileges to the NAS. Then use Control Panel -> Shared Folder to create the folder, i.e. accounting, marketing, etc. In Privileges Setup, make sure no individual user has access, then change Local Users to Local Groups, check Read/Write for the appropriate group and uncheck access for the group "users." In addition to "home" members of the group will have access to an appropriately named volume. I don't use CloudStation, so I can't address that.

I think the CloudStation works by giving each user his own CloudStation folder linked to their login info. So there is one under admin, Person1, Person2...and they are all separate. When you login to the CloudStation using Synology's software, it syncs with the CloudStation folder associated with the login info.

I'm not sure ezCloud lets you decide which folder to sync (if it did then you could just do the share thing from above poster).

Well, I am doing this, as I have 2 computers that I use.
One at work and one at home.
They both run CloudStation with the same account.
I have not seen any issues with this, but of course I am not logged in at the same time from both computers. I will try and test this.

You are correct. The CloudStation folder you use on the NAS is controlled by the login you use in the client.
One could wish for the posibility to use multiple accounts with the client, or be able to share folders between users.

Multi User CLOUD STATION

Postby pedro54 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 9:08 am

Hello,

We just buyed a DS712+ for the CLOUDSTATION. We are using dropbox on 6 computers. 2 Computers (the boss computers) can access two folders and the others just access one of these folders (employees computers).

We created 6 users but it doesn't work. Each user have it own cloudstation but there is no way to share it we other users...

I'm really desapointed cause we buy these NAS for the Cloudstation to stop using dropbox but that can't work.

Anybody have an idea? Should I return the product?

Thanks in advance

I'm in the exact same situation as Pedro and I'm also very disapointed by the cloudStation "single user" thing.

Is there really no way to share a cloudStation between users ?

Thanks

Well thank you for your quick answer. Is there something to do to get that beta version ?

In the download section, they provide this link : http://usdl.synology.com/download/DiskStation/

Will it be available there ?

Thanks

Re: Share folder with multiple users

Postby d.roche » Thu Jul 05, 2012 3:56 pm

Hello,

i have tried this, to achieve the multi user sharing with CloudStation :

- created a dedicated share , say /volume1/CloudShare with the correct rights for all
my users

- for each users in their home directory , i removed the CloudStation directory and replace it
with a symbolic link to /volume1/CloudShare

- installed the client software on several PC with different account for each

It almost works !

the first synchronisation is playing well ( while quite long ) on every PC, and i have now
the same share synchronized on each PC.

however, it seems that that file created or modified by a user are not automatically synchronised with the other users ! too bad !
what is strange is ,if i create/modify a file directly from the NAS console, beeing root, in
this case it is propagated to every PC.

Well, i will continue investigations, but i hope the next version will fix the problem.

CloudStation is a very interesting idea , but as is , it is quite not useable in a professionnal environment with multiple users sharing same files

I have to recant this statement. We are using one account to share files across different computers. Seems to work, kind of. There are troubles signing in sometimes and it unlinks often. Not sure if this is due to the multiple computers or just the spotty nature of the CloudStation in general.

I'm having this trouble too - how did you fix it? I have Cloud Station set up on both my Windows 7 PC and my Macbook Pro, using the same user account. Seemed to work OK originally, then I think I complicated it by moving my iTunes library to the Cloud Station home folder in the hope that I could synchronise my iTunes library across all devices.

However, it has also corrupted the syncing of my ordinary files (not in iTunes folder) where a deleted file keeps reappearing each time I delete it.

How did you fix this problem when you experienced it?
