local backup does not work

Hi

I have a older Synology Diskstation DS106e. The Disk Station Manager 2.0 and the firmware DSM 2.0-0731 is running on it. Further a 500GB WD USB harddrive is connected.

Now if I go on "local backup" in the Disk Station Manager then there only appears "loading..." but there is no progress. Some time ago it worked and I could do a backup on my usb harddrive, but now I can't edit it. I have already restarted the diskstation, but it did not help.

What can I do?

Further it's possible to run with a trick a newer firmware version and disk station manager. Which version can I install at most? And what whould be the addvantages beside the higher possible harddisk capacity?

Is the external HD detected correctly.
Memory problems (tooo much services running at the same time)?

DSM:
It is possible to upgrade, but it is a bit tricky and may be "dangerous"

So in general you could modify some parameters in /etc/synoinfo.conf and use FW for DS108j. Seems some problem with writing into logs every 4 seconds...

The external HD is correctly detected, I can also access the HD, but the backup tab in the Synology Disk Manager does not work.

I don't know if there are memory problems, but I have also restarted the device and there is the same problem and everything else works.


What would be the advantage of upgrading the firmware?
