Hey, I also received my fan today, but which claws are they talking about? I have absolutely no clue, I'm so afraid of breaking something...

Okay I finally got the case open, and changed the fan, however the problem consist, do anyone know if I can just buy a 92mm fan, and pop it in? Are there any RPM warnings, as I'm considering getting a 1600RPM instead of the stock 1800RPM which comes with it...

I'm considering this, too. . There's a discussion about fan replacement in viewtopic.php?f=140&t=33742
I don't think there should be any problem though. Maybe buy it from a local hardware store so you can return it in case it doesn't work.

Got the same problem here.
Contacted Synology Support by e-mail. Within 1 day Synology replied with the announcement to send me a new fan and a fan-replacement manual.
Today i received my new fan an i replaced it.
This solved the problem !!

I received my fan today as well. Although without the manual.

How did you open the case?

The DS212 case simple slides open, front to back,

For whose that search for a solution I found it!!
I bought a different fan in order to replace the standard one producing the mentioned irritating noise: it's produced by Arctic and the model is ARCTIC F9 Pro (http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/case-fans/78/arctic-f-pro.html?c=2183).
It's perfect!! No more noise! And none alarm for different rotation speed compared to the original.
Now I have a perfect, wonderful, amazing Synology Diskstation212. :)
It was easy to open and replace, no difficulties for me.

I hope that someone can solve this problem too

Bye

Yesterday I upgraded my DS212+ to DSM 4 beta and started to have the exact same problem as can be heard in the youtube clip. That confirms to me that it's a software (and weak hardware?) issue.

Synology is already sending me a replacement fan, but I think, judging from this thread, it will not help me.

About the Arctic fan, which size do I need to buy? (I'm not at home, so can't measure the thing now).

F9 model is 10cm x 10cm size

The speedy and effective support of Synology resulted in a DS212+ running DSM 4 beta without a ticking fan!!

Apparently Synology located the cause of the ticking noise. It is caused by the software. They remotely logged into my NAS and fixed it. I assume this fix will be part of a future DSM version!

So my advice, contact Synology and either ask them to fix it remotely (they need admin access), or wait for a patch they're working on or eventually a DSM update.

Dear All,

For DS212 and DS212+ owners who are experiencing fan noise and fan errors, we encourage them to submit a support ticket to properly diagnose the root cause.

We have recognized that some noise issues may be caused by a slow fan rotation speed under a low temperature environment, and will gladly provide the patch that will solve these cases.
On the other hand, a defective fan controller may also cause such symptoms, which may require users to RMA their unit.
Lastly, please avoid installing third-party fans in your Diskstation as this action falls under the hardware modifications disclaimer and will void your warranty.

Thank you for your patience.

Worrying fan-sound

Postby oRBIT » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:45 am

My DS212 runs fine 99.9% of the time.. But I've started to hear sounds from it sometimes. I think it's the fan. It says
TACK - TACK - TACK - TACK - TACK
pretty loud and then goes back to normal. I've heard it two times now and I've had my NAS for perhaps two months.
I'm running DSM 3.2.. Could it be a software issue, since I hear it so rarely?

I too have this problem! I bought it yesterday and I already have another DS212+ in for service related to probably the same issue (system was saying defective fan all the time!). Been waiting a long time for it to come back from service, so I bought another one! Gonna return this unit unless someone replies here with news on a patch or something that fixes this problem!

If noone replies here within 2 hours, i'm returning it. If the replacement unit have the same issue, I am stepping away from Synology. Which is sad, because I have a ReadyNAS RDNU4000, but it's just way too noisy to have in the same room as you're in (my office). Here's where the DS212+ shines, if it wasn't for this very annoying noise. :)

Hoping for a quick reply!
