How to add security exception in firefox3?

Postby Elena » Tue Sep 02, 2008 7:54 am

Dear all,

Since there are more and more peolpe who have the same problem while connecting to his NAS with firefox3 but shows "Secure Connection Failed" message.
Therefore I provide the security exception setting for a possible solution with this problem.
1) When you connect to DS through https in Firefox 3, the browser won’t let you pass if the certificate is invalid.
2) For solving this, click “Or you can add an exception” from the error page, then click “Add Exception”.
3) In “Add Security Exception” dialog, press “Get Certificate” button. The “Get Certificate” will override how firefox identifies the site.
4) Press “Confirm Security Exception” button to add the site to the exception list and reconnect to the site.
5) Now you can access DS management UI through https in Firefox 3.

Hope this is useful for you while having the same problem.

Here is the procedure for Opera:
When connecting to your DS via HTTPS you will see a message like that:
Image
Here switch to the security tab and check "Remeber my choice for this certificate"
Image
Then click on "Approve" and you're done.
Now this certificate should appear under Tools => Preferences => Advanced => Security => Manage Certificates => Approved.

Well, I moved to real certificates instead of the self-signed ones, problem solved. Generally I find this to be a better approach. You can get a free one with CAcert, e.g.

Did the CAcert work for you? I get a certificate error going to their website, not a good start.......

I agree with you that using a certificate is a better way than adding an exception to a security policy. One question for you though; using a certificate / setting up a certificate like with CAcert, is that self-explanatory, or easy to use?

It is not straight-forward at all in my opinion.

Through Googling, trial and error, I managed to replace the self-signed certificate with a free, validated certificate from StartSSL.

I posted my steps here:

Replacing self-signed certificate on Synology Disk Station running DSM 3.0
DS-207+ running DSM 3.1-1636 with 2 x 2 TB Western Digital RE4-GP (RAID1)
DS-108j running DSM 3.2-1955 with 1 x 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F1

If you recieve this error and are trying to access something that has a self signed certificate, there are 2 places in Firefox that you must go and change in order to access this site again.

The first is under Tools--> options-->Advanced-->View Certificates

You must remove the certificates in the "Servers" tab, then under the same location you must remove the certificate authority because it is a self signed certificate, so on the "Authorities" tab, simply find the CA for the device you are having trouble with and delete it.

After these changes you should be able to access your device again without any problems, you will have to add another exception back to firefox, but that is the normal routine for self signed certs.
