Update HDD firmware?

Postby the-ninth » Wed Jun 27, 2012 7:14 am

Hi All,

I'd like to update the firmware of my four Seagate Barracudas in my DS-408. Is there a way to do that in the Diskstation or do I need to take them out and do the update with my PC?

I have the ST3000DM001, which has a noise issue that is fixed in their latest firmware.

Cheers, Robert

Hi

You have to take them out, and do it from a computer.

Remember to backup your data

As far as I know, all HDD firmware update procedures require always a 'real' (intel) PC, typically booted with a DOS image.
I don't think the main HDD vendors support yet f/w upgrade from Linux machines (like the Synology), even less from non-intel powered CPU.

Thanks guys. After checking the Seagate website I was already afraid that there is no other way, but nevertheless was hoping for some magic trick. ;)

I think I'll live with the noise for now then. :)

I have this same issue, but I am running a 1512+ 5x3TB drives in a RAID 6 (so dual redundancy). I don't mind pulling out one drive at a time. Updating firmware. Putting the drive back in the DS. Making sure we are good and then repeating.

Can i take each drive out one at a time and then do this? What's the process for doing that? Do i shut down the DS first? I posted a new thread on this topic too.

Thank you.

The best way (for the array) is that you shutdown the NAS, then upgrade the HDD firmware one disk at the time, then boot up again. Remember to take a backup before starting the whole operation!
It would be nice to boot the NAS after every disk upgrade to check that things went ok, but it would mean facing a volume rebuild every time... which is definitely something you want to avoid unless necessary.

I actually did this update to CCH4 by pulling one drive hooking it up, updating firmware, putting it back in, and powering up the NAS and making sure there were no issues. It was a little nervewrecking, but worked like a charm.

My new question is, I swear my transfer rates have slowed down since updating to the latest firmware. I'm running the Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB 72000rpm Sata 6Gb drives. Is this possible?

If we are talking about DSM "firmware" perhaps, it is possible that there is some bug and things gets slower, as it affect the whole box and how it interconnects with the network.
But about hard disk firmware (which is the thread subject) I really doubt that it can make a disk slower.
