question about shr vs raid 1

Postby avchd » Mon Feb 27, 2012 11:33 am

hello all,
I have a Synology NAS ds211j with DSM 4.0 beta
I'm 'using the nas with two 1TB hard drives configured in raid 1 mirrored mode
but in fact in this mode, 'I only have 1 TB of usable space for storing data.
I read on the forum synology that there is also a method called shr
and I wondered if I had to use this feature much space I actually available?
if there is a problem on a disk 'will recover the data previously stored?
proceedings to recover data and 'simple' fast?
Hello, expect your answers.
thanks

No it doesnt matter. SHR with 2 HD is useless (= same as RAID1). To get the advantage of SHR you need at least 3 HD.

Please I'm in a similar boat I have 2 HDD

1 Tera WD
2 Tera WD
-------------- Total
3 Tera WD

Which would be the best configuration to take advantage of the maximum of the HDD space.
Which would be the order of placement of the HDD, which would put first and which then or on the contrary it is irrelevant.
Thank you.

It doesnt matter which HD you put on which port.

To get full size either create 2 independent volumes (1 for each disk) or create a JBOD volume over 2 disks.

Thanks for your response is what hare in the future because created me the two HDD on the same disk volume and do not see the sum of the capacity of two sizes and to eliminate to want to separate them have lost data from the HDD 1 Tera which is which was full.
Now I have to see if I can retrieve the SHR format and start the process again.
I recomendais some program especially for this.
Thank you.

With this configuration can you back up files with a USB external hard drive?

Thanks
