DS412+ support AES encrypted volumes/folders/whatever?

Postby JackFlack » Fri Apr 13, 2012 12:39 pm

I've been over all the specs and everything I can find in the forum, but I can't figure out if the DS412+ supports AES encryption of the RAID shares. I see that the DS212 indicates that it has an AES hardware encryption module (and presumably supports encryption), but no such information exists on the 412+. I'm looking for a 4 bay that can be encrypted in case it is stolen.

Well considering the DS212 and RS212 support encryption on a share(folder)-level, id be very surprised if the ds412+ doesnt support at least the same.

In http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=43955&p=170016&hilit=hardware+encryption#p170016 they talk about the fact that the higher end DS have floating point calculation as part of the intel processors, which handle the encryption.

See the link below for more details on the performance hit you can expect with encryption enabled:

Same question here. I need encryption and want to purchase the DS412+ but cannot find the indication "Hardware Encryption Engine" on the DS412+.

Can I encrypt shared folders on the DS412+?
Does it have a Hardware Encryption Engine like noted on the spec of the DS212+?

Bump - does any Synology sales people even look at this forum? Not mentioning Encryption in the DS412+ specs looks like an oversight, but for the mean time, it prevents me (and others in this forum) from buying it.

By not mentioning it in the specs, Synology is shooting itself in the foot.

Please confirm Hardware Encryption Engine on the DS412+.

I used to think the 412+ had AES hardware encryption, but definitely knew that the higher end models had AES hardware encryption (such as the DS712+), however Synology seems to have removed all mention of the AES hardware encryption from their pages - which is strange...

I would open a support ticket with synology or give them a call - they will be able to answer the question directly.

Cheers

Hi, I tried to open a ticket but serial number is mandatory, which of course I don't have because this is a pre-sales question. I also sent them an email but have had no answer for a week. Strange.

Ah yes, I had the same problem.

Just send a mail through to support@synology.com and try sales@synology.com.

I have a DS412+ and there is an option to encrypt Shared Folders, although I suspect this is software rather than hardware based.

Creating a test share I wasn't given the option the manual states of setting an AES key size, there is a warning over performance loss on the folder which suggests software encryption too. Once it's created a key file is downloaded.

So the 412+ does let you create an encrypted Shared Folder, but I suspect the CPU has sufficient horse power to handle the encryption itself without dedicated hardware.

This is all based on DS4.0-2228

Thanks rjc, this is exactly the answer I got from Synology. Actually the software encryption on the DS412+ gives better results than the hardware encryption on the DS212+, due to the powerful CPU on the DS412+.

AES 256-bit Encrypted File Upload/Download(1) (5GB File)

22.65MB/sec upload and 31.69 MB/sec download for the DS412+ (soft encryption)
13.20MB/sec upload and 23.46 MB/sec download for the DS212+ (hard encryption)

The procedure to activate the encryption is described here:
