To add my 2 cents, I'm on my second DS1812 (first had the blue LED issue), and while the first one was disappointingly loud the second is whisper quiet. Both units used the default fan settings with 4 drives in bays 1-4 and the difference is night and day. Anybody having noise issues may just have a dodgy fan somewhere.

Then where is all that noise coming from? :?

power supply?

1812+ is louder than I was expecting, not server room loud though

The noise is from the case/system fan. This increases in speed if the CPU gets to warm to help cool the passive heatsink

Actually there is a 40mm fan in the PSU and even though it is not too loud, its noise has an annoying characteristic to it. The 120mm system fans in the DS1812+ are pretty much silent.

Yes, same problem here! The noise is annoying, indeed. I am thinking about a replacement but I wonder if the new unit would have the same PSU and noise level?

I haven't opened my 1812+ yet.

Anyone know if a standard 40mm fan swap would work?

I finally asked for a replacement which was done very quickly by Amazon! Unfortunately the sound level and characteristics are the same for the new unit ;(
Nevertheless, I decided to keep the unit (everything else works well) and perhaps I will be able to install new fans later.

This is disappointing to hear. The 1812+ should be quieter than the 1512+ according to the stats.

My Netgear NVX is stupidly loud, even with changed fans.

Noise is somewhat subjective though, do you reckon you could create a recording and put it on youtube?

I would not want something loud at home.

Thanks very much,

G.

Hi all,

If anybody is interested I resolved fan noise from the diet. I replaced it with a "Silent Fan SCYTHE Mini Kaze (SY124010L)" successfully.

Nice ! 8)
Is it hard to replace to fan and to open the PSU ?
The fan connectors from the old one and the Scythe are the same ?

Hello,
The PSU is not very hard to beginning accession just a few screws. The fan connector is welded ;)

Just got my 1812+ and, yes, the PSU fan is too loud. I already ordered the fan suggested by Vincent. My 411j also had noisy fans. Seems like I need to do this every time I upgrade.

@vincentlauria

Is it really welded?

Would you happen to have a pic of the inside of the ds1812+?

Thanks for the research guys :D

How has you welded the cables? Because I have bought fractal fan, an welded black to black and red to red, but it doesn't work... Please I really need this. Fractal fan has three cables, Black, Red an Yellow.

Best regards.

Fixed!!! Just one cable was touching the fan. It's working now and finally, noise is over!!!!! I'm very happy with my "new" ds1812+ completely silent
