Is the blue blinking light of death fixed?

Postby superfly611 » Sat Jul 14, 2012 3:29 pm

I was contacted by someone for support from synology the other day in reference to a question I had. My question was whether or not the blue blinking light of death has been fixed. I'm looking to buy either the ds1511 or ds1512. I was leaning towards the 1511 because of the blue blinking light of death from the 1512. Technical support said "The issue with the DS1512+ has been identified and all affected units have been recalled and fixed. The affected units would not have caused data loss. Any remaining units should not be affected."

Is this true or are they just trying to sell their product?

I don't know if it matters but I was looking to buy it from Amazon.

Other than the retailers return policy, It doesn’t matter where you buy it from. As far as affected units, it will be a crap shot. Synology may have identified the issue but the recall process involved the consumer and retailer email the serial number(s) to Synology for confirmation. I doubt the big box stores would go through this process.

I purchased my 1812+ in late April after the so called recall… When it arrived I emailed my serial to Synology and was told my unit was not in the affected range. Yet, after 2+ months of operation, I received the “Blue Ring of Death” a few days ago.

I’m still waiting for Synology to approve my RMA.

Good luck…

I have a DS1512+ and it was brand new on 5/15/12 and it has been bullet proof. I installed DSM 4.0-2228 right away and restarted the unit about 5 times over the first 8 of ownership to see if i could cause the BBOD before I got to much on it. It has only been restarted once since then and that was to install DSM 4.1-2567 Beta.

DSM 4.0-2228 and newer is suppose to have an application bug fix as well so with hardware that wasn't suppose to be affected and with DSM 4.0-2228 you should not have any issues.
Remember: RAID is not a replacement for backups

ive just RMAed a 10TB DS1512+ back to the supplier.
was working fine for two weeks until i tried to relocate if off my desk to the server room.
it just wouldn't restart again... blue flashing LED all day long.

i emailed syno at the ivegotablueflashingled@ email address and they told me my unit wasn't effected. i waved the email at the DS1512+ but the DS wasn't having any of it.

of course it might be a totally unrelated flashing blue light error to the well know flashing blue light error, it difficult to tell when all you have is a blue LED that either flashes or it dosnt.

i got my ds1512 and so far its been good. i have 5 3tb drives in it but only 2 lights are up. 2 green led and 1 solid blue. even though i have 5 drives in it. i have it set up as SHR raid or whatever its called with 1 drive redundancy. does it sound right? is it that it uses 2 drives until they are full then starts another 2?

On my RS some of the LEDS are very dim, so i pay little attention to them.
The best way to confirm if the drives are ok is to check the storage manager via DSM.

What you would like to see is "Volume one" on the top left and then all 5 drives showing in the bottom right. If you all 5 drives are not listed in the bottom right they are not part of the volume and you will need to investigate a bit further.

They are all listed and are all healthy. I do see the little dim green light on all 5 but there are only two brighter LEDs on top the hard drive. One is solid and one is blinking sometimes. The rest of the lights on top the other 3 hard drives are not lit up. I was thinking it was because I am using SHR raid or whatever it's called and they may only use two hard drives at a time until it gets full then jump to another 2. I don't know.

i think you might be getting the LEDs mixed up.

the 4 lights across the top of the unit do not relate to the drives.
The lights across the top read Status Lan1 Lan2 Alert.
its normal for Status to be solid and Lan1 to blink due to activity.
