@dagrafrica - Since you have done your guide, have you had this problem? Or has it been fixed since?

I´ve had this one twice before. This guide helped me both of them.

Does anyone know how to prevent this error?

My wife and I have new macbooks, latest Lion 10.7.2, latest DSM 3.2 and yet keep having this Time Machine Verification error. This seemed to have started more frequently in the last month as compared to 2 months ago when we were first using the Time Machine back-ups on the Synology DS411J?

I'm most concerned with how to PREVENT the error, not just how to repair the sparsebundle?

Thanks

I've had the same experience with my DS110j for the past few months. After updating to DSM 3.2 (in order to support upgrading a laptop to OS X Lion), I frequently see this error message. I have let it create a fresh backup on several occasions, but always after a few weeks the error message comes back.

I would love to be able to prevent this error. I have tracked several minor updates to DSM 3.2, and am currently on 3.2-1955.

Yes, and again it happened to me today !  this time again on the iMac

Does anybody have an alternative for Time Machine ? It is just not reliable to me. It has now happened on my iMac (about 3 times) , on my MacBookPro (about 3 times). very very strange !

... And here we go again. Early this morning I woke the computer up from sleepmode just to quickly check my mail. Later, about 6 hour this problem came up again.

sadly i suppose we have to live with this. Maybe it has something to to with sleepmode. But all backups will paus and restart if you either shut down or put the computer to sleep. This time nothing was changed from the evening before.

We can use this thread to pinpoint whats causing this problem.

My setup: (EDIT)
DS 109 latest firmware 3.2 1955
iMac 2011
Ratio 30 GB for time machine user.
Almost 26 GB is used, time machine deletes old backups if it needs more space.
Router Airport Extreme
Backups through WIFI

No thoughts about when it occurs.

Can we start keeping a list of how often this happens ? Maybe that will help Synology in quantifying.

Here is my list that I am aware off

    1. (gd11_be - Belgium) - DS211 - iMac - Mid 2010 - Wired network
    2. (gd11_be - Belgium) - DS211 - iMac - Late 2010 - Wired network - felt like happened after putting mac to sleep during TM backup
    3. (gd11_be - Belgium) - DS211 - MacBook Pro - Late 2010 - Wifi -felt like happened after putting mac to sleep during TM backup

Please add your name - ds type - macbook type - date - type of network wired/wifi - situation to the list. Maybe we can start seeing a pattern. Please quote and edit the list items? Thanks ! :) :)

Hi Guys,

New to the forum. Over the holidays, I bought a DS1511+ to backup my iPhoto library and my wife's and my MacBook pros. The iPhoto backup (copy the iPhoto Library from my computer to the Synology) was painful; for some reason it would fail at some point in time. I had to manually copy and paste each of the folders in the iPhoto Library and repair it afterwards. In any case, a different story to tell.
Tonight I tried using Time Machine to backup our brand new SSDs. I had my wife's MacBook pro wired to my home LAN, and it failed to backup 3 times. Twice at about 18GB out of 89GB and a third at about 69GB out of the same 89GB. She is using Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I am getting the same error as the one posted: basically that Time Machine crashes prompting that it needs to create a new backup.
I am now trying mine out. My MacBook pro is running Lion 10.7.2. Currently backing up.
I really like the DS1511+, but this problem is driving me nuts. One of the main reasons for investing on this thing was to able to backup everything we had in multiple places, including the use of Time Machine.

Please help...

Here is the log on my wife's Macbook pro right before it failed:

Lion 10.7.2
Macbook Pro Early 2011
DS209
WiFi N

It just happened again to me. Unfortunately, I can not progress in this way. I now use an external drive for TimeMachine rather than my Synology.

I have a feeling this has to do with perhaps Lion's Sleep mode, or placing the Macbook to sleep while it's backing up.

Perhaps we should list whether or not we are using Sleep Mode? I routinely put my machine to sleep rather than shut it completely off. How about you, those affected?

MacBook Pro 10.6.8... affected by this problem.
I can't even get the initial backup done.
I have set the laptop to never sleep while powered on by A/C. I have also set permissions to guest for the time machine share. No go.
I posted the log before, but my post never showed up.

Hello,
I am joining the club.
I have a DS211j, DSM 3.2
I got this message today on a Macbook Pro 10.7.2. Verifying the back up's file system as described on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4076 did not show any problems with the sparse image.

Another Powerbook running OS Leopard can still back to the DS without trouble.

I shall forward this to Tech Support and I wait what they say.

Luckily, I am also running good old Retrospect which hardly ever plays up.

I've been getting all kinds of error messages on my macbook pro backing up since upgrading to lion:
time machine could not be accessed error-1
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Time Machine Backups-1/[username].sparsebundle” is already in use.
An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)

and now the one in this thread. I'm on my second or third redo of my backup. Tried the sparse bundle repair and that failed.

While I've been having trouble since lion, my wife's macbook, which is still running snow leopard, backs up fine. No problems at all. So it seems like there's an incompatibility between lion and the NAS.

Let us know what you hear from support Twistan.

I can confirm Sam's experience exactly. My new MB Air with Lion 10.7.2 generates the "Time Machine failed verification - create a new backup" message 4 times in the past week - last night creating a new backup and then giving the verification failed message in the morning 1 hour after finishing. My wife's MBAir with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 backs up just fine (as did my previous machine with Snow Leopard as of 3 weeks ago)

a few discussions at Apple boards https://discussions.apple.com/thread/36 ... 0&tstart=0
do seem to trend toward a Lion issue. I just installed 10.7.3 so we'll see if there's a fix within.

Those affected: is anyone experiencing the problem directly conencted to the NAS server via ethernet? Or is everyone WiFi?
