problems with USB printers on DSM print server

I have two printers connected to my DSM, both HP, one a Laserjet 1100 and the second a Deskjet 1280.

Both printers are recognised in the printers tab of the Diskstation assistant. The 1280 sometimes appears in the external devices list of the DSM and sometimes not. Both printers appear as MFP although they are not multi-function.

The main problem however is that both printers, although show ready in the printers list on the local machines, do not respond. When printing a test page the spooler seems to just keep re-trying continually, finally after sometime an error message is displayed on the client computer. With a little tweaking the printers can be forced to work (re-loading the driver to the client machine) however if the client machine or the diskstation is re-booted, the connection is lost, even though the client machines indciate the printer is available and ready in the printers list and the diskstation also shows the printers (when the 1280 does display)

Any clues? The 1100 is listed as compatable, although I believe the 1280 may not be?

Follow up on the printer issues, subject to carrying out some tests over this week I think I have the problem resolved.

Will post further details when i know for sure at the end of the week

How did you solve the problem? I have a HP Laserjet P1005, which is not printing at all...
