Use Western Digital Mybook World Edition disks

Postby gloec » Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:56 pm

Dear all,
I have a Synology DS411j and unfortunately one of my 1TB disks failed and needs to be replaced. The replacement process will take sometime and what I would like to do is to use a 1TB disk from a WD Mybook World Edition storage that it is not used anymore.
I took the disks out and when I installed one of them in my Synology, it could not be seen by the system. I took the disk out and I then used the second one with exactly the same results.
What I did after that was to try my luck by installing the disks in a PC with Windows XP, then to a PC with Windows 7, then in a docking station connected to both Windows XP/7 and MAC OSX 10.6 and then as a last resort I used Hiren boot CD and many of the utilities but again it was not possible to recognise the disks.
I finally reinstalled the disks to the WD enclosure which recognised them with no trouble at all!
I do not know what else to do, I googled it but I could not find anything and your help at this point would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance.

The drive uses xfs or ext3 formatting. Apparently you can mount this from within linux.

"The drives of the World Edition are xfs or ext3 formatted, which means that the drive can be mounted as a standard drive from within Linux if removed from the casing and installed in a normal PC."
