WD20EARX in RAID 5

Postby Peligroso » Mon Oct 10, 2011 11:03 am

Hi,

I'm about to order my first NAS and I've decided to go for the Synology DS1511+. My only problem is deciding which hard drives to get. I had kind of made my mind up to go for the Hitachi 5k3000 2TB drives, but unfortunately they're sold out in all of Sweden and nobody seems to know when they'll be in stock again.

While researching which NAS to go for, I was considering getting QNAP for a long time as well and judging by their support pages, going for the WD20EARX drives (which appears to be a successor to WD20EARS) doesn't seem to be recommended over there because they don't work well in RAID.

Does anyone know if this has been resolved for WD20EARX or if it's still risky business to use these drives for a RAID5 configuration? I also read about some special stuff you were supposed to do before using them in a NAS, would I have to do something before using them with DS1511+?

Thankful for help :)

I am having a nightmare with these WD units.

We are in the process of replacing them with Enterprise Series WD Drives for our RAID 5 Server

Bah, okay. Thanks a lot, think I'll have to wait until the Hitachis are back in stock in Sweden then :)
