WD30EZRX crash on DS411+

Postby fzuend » Wed Aug 31, 2011 10:21 pm

Hi everyone,

Last week I purchased a DS411+ and four WD30EZRX (3TB) drives. Setup went fine and I am using the Synology Hybrid RAID. Yesterday drive 1 crashed. I plugged it into a PC and removed the partitions. I plugged it back into the DS411+ and repaired the system - that went well. It worked fine for one day, now drive 1 AND drive 4 crashed!! Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks
Fabio

No but I would have been very cautious re-using the drive if it has crashed once. Hopefully you also have backups.

Rather than removing the partitions, try to remove the drive and insert it back, if that doesn't work, turn the unit off and then back on with all drives. If the drive volume is ok, or resyncs, the drive "fell out of the array" which basically means it took too long to respond and DSM marked it dead. If it happens once, it is very likely to happen again.

This is the essence of the WD RAID warning

Which is linked on the compatibility page in this statement

Always choose hard drives that suit your needs. According to hard drive manufacturers, desktop class hard drives are designed for balanced performance and reliability for everyday computing, while enterprise class hard drives are designed to deliver higher performance standards suitable for 24x7 mission critical business applications. Hard drive manufacturers do not recommend installing desktop class hard drives for the RAID environment regarding to these reasons. Please choose the hard drive that fits your needs.

Which as far as I am concerned, is just WD marketing to sell their drives more expensively, proven IMO when they removed the ability to enable TLER on drives.

http://store.westerndigital.com/store/w ... D.13095400 for the WD Caviar Green drives

on the overview tab...

Ideal For
Desktop PCs and external storage requiring high capacity, low power consumption, and cool, quiet operation.
Desktop / Consumer RAID Environments - WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are tested and recommended for use in consumer-type RAID applications (Raid-0 / RAID-1).*

*Business Critical RAID Environments – WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are not recommended for and are not warranted for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider WD's Enterprise Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing.

home nas they say the drives are fine for home type raid.. for a business they wouldnt suggest it. and i think it is just marketing like with your phone or cable.. home its 30 a month for a phone line and 30 for cable.. put that same service with a slower internet speed in a business.. its 50 for the phone and 80 for cable.
