DSCam Path

DSCam Path

Postby dublin1 » Mon May 07, 2012 12:11 pm

Apologies if this has been raised before - if it has I cannot find it!

In DSCam for the ipad when setting up Direct Camera Access you are asked to add a Path. There is no expalnation in the help screen as to what this path is or more importantly how to find it out. I have seen several posts asking "what is the path for camera XXX" and the answsr tend to offer several possibilities (depending on camera make or typy (?)).

Could somebody out there provide the following for me and sememingly countless other users:

1. What is a Path? What does it refer to?
2. How can you find out what your path is? Do you need to logon to the server in command line mode to do this and if so what are the steps.
3. When entering the path what exactly do you have to type in. My impression is that it should be a long path name but most mesage board entries are shorthanding it down to the last parameter.

Lastly
Where on thsi bulleting board can I submit a request to Synology to address this gap in their help file and user manual?

I have a DS211J and an INSTAR 3011 Ip Camera.
For the record the Instar 3011 works if you set it up using the default 3010 option. The only problem I have found is that the pan left and right seem to be reversed. I can access the camera using surveillence station within my home wireless network using my IP and DScam. I can also access it remotely (only) via a browser session to surveillance station and also to the camera direct - so my router set up is OK. What seems to be the issue with remote IPad access is this Path parameter.

Thanks in advance for any help or light you can shine on this.

In your case the path is the IP or DDNS address and the port (in general 5000) of your Synology device (for example mydomain.com:5000)
The questions you are refering to belong to the setup of not official supported cams within the surveillance station.

Hi dublin1,

I'm bit confused as to why you are using the "Direct camera access" option when the INSTAR 3011 camera you have is supported by the Synology Surveillance Station (at least under DSM 4.0-2219 & DS cam 3.2.2)? The 3010 and 3011 are identical apart from the fact that the 3011 has switchable LED's.

In theory you should be able to view live and archived video just by connecting DS cam to the NAS IP as I have. If you do however want or need to use the "Direct camera access" option, the path information can be found on the INSTAR Help Pages by poking around a few of the links as some software (like DS cam direct) and other apps require a path.

As far as I can ascertain, the path for your camera is:
Code: Select all
http://<IP or ddns address of your camera>/videostream.cgi?user=<username>&pwd=<password>
where /videostream.cgi? is the actual path but you may need the entire string /videostream.cgi?user=<username>&pwd=<password>. You may or may not require the leading forward slash. In other links I've also seen reference to the following URL http://xxx.dyndns.org:80/videostream.cgi?user=admin&pwd= where videostream.cgi?user=admin&pwd= would be your path. You may also want to try HarryPotters suggestion and just enter the IP address again in the path field?

In the case of another Sony IP camera I have connected to a home automation server (Vera 2), this system requires a path too which took me some researching. The path in that case is simply entered as oneshotimage.jpg.

Addtional information on URL stream paths can be found on Google and on the help pages of the IP camera manufacturer. I've listed a couple of links that may assist others though should they choose this option if their camera is not directly supported
