Synology web page -> Products tab -> Compare products -> tick DS411, DS411j, click compare:

DS411 vs DS411j - Worth £100 more?

Postby britcowboy » Wed Mar 14, 2012 3:28 am

Hi all,

I know what the differences are between the two, mainly the CPU and RAM, but the question is is it worth the extra £100?

I've ordered the j, but am having second thoughts on if I should upgrade. My intention is to replace an old PC acting as a server (this will be my first nas!). I want to hold data from a number if hard drives I've accrued over the years, download torrents, serve videos to my PS3, share my printer, and I want to install Crashplan in order to backup some of the data to an offsite location (http://pcloadletter.co.uk/2012/01/30/cr ... o-package/), as well as handle one encrypted shared folder.

The NAS has only one user (me). So will the j be fine for my needs? My main worry is the lack of RAM for Crashplan/java and the lack of being able to have other apps if I need to in the future. However, £100 seems like a relatively large amount of money when the NAS is only really to be used by me, sounds a bit like overkill.

So what I'm asking is, what would you do?
