Successor to DS710+?

I would also like to buy a successor of DS710+ which should have a better colling design - for cool and quiet computing. I think that it could come in the DS211+ enclosure, which seems really usable, quiet and cool.
On another note, the DS211+ is a disappointed, because of the CPU used inside, which gives lower performance than older DS210+ model.

It could also be called DS711+ as far as I am concerned. Indeed, it would be great to have the latest dual core Atom and 1 GB of RAM in it. Most importantly, it should come at the same or lower price than the DS710+

Watching the enclosures' design, I can see that DS710+ was made to resemble the DS1010+ and DX510. I think it was a big mistake to market DS710+ as a NAS for stacking 7 drives using DX510, because if anyone wanted to have 7 drivers in a NAS they would chose a different base model than DS710+. The chosen enclosure design forced it to have a small bottom intake fan without any ventilation wholes, instead of flow through design with big fan at the rear of the box. This makes it both noisy and hot. Meaning, not really suitable for a home use, but rather to be placed in a server room with high power cooling system and sound proof walls.

Right now Synology does not have a perfect NAS for home users. In my opinion a perfect NAS should have:
- Dual core Intel Atom CPU, or comparable (with floating point) for fast Web and multimedia operations
- 1 GB of fast RAM, so it does not swap memory on the HDD
- 2 HDD drive bays
- 2 USB ports (could be 3.0, but not necessarily)
- 1 or 2 powered E-SATA ports
- very quiet flow through design with big slow rotating fan (optionally easy to clean)
- low electricity consumption for 24/365 operation
- possibility to switch off the diodes, so that it could be places in a bedroom at night.

Please post your opinions about perfect NAS specs for power home users.

The design of ds211+ is much better than 710+ because of the fan size (92mm vs 80mm) and position (back, pull air vs front push air) IMHO.
The specs of DS211+ is dissapointing since practically it is DS211 (the same CPU) with more ram and esata.
From what i've heard the performance of DS211+ is much slower than DS210+ (the DS210+ has FPU, the DS 211+ has not).
DS210+ RAM could be upgraded, DS211+ can't.
DS211+ does not have Wake On Lan.
HotSwapped drives in 710+ SHOULD be from front, right now it is useless.
Better cooling vents (bigger and better positioned) should be made as soon as possible.

Common Synology esata should be standard in all DS's. The local backup via usb is a torment.

Too many step backwards.

I am waiting for better (hopefully) DS212+ and 712+ with USB3 and esata and Wake On Lan, RAM upgradeable, faster cpu with fpu in both DS's, better quieter fans (such as NoiseBlocker series low RPM), etc. etc.

Well, it seems you pretty much nailed my idea of the ideal NAS for me. Maybe different order of priority:

- You specify Atom, I say CPU powerful enough to pull SurveillanceCenter with several cameras + DLNA services etc. and Squeezebox Server transcoding FLAC from high-res to lower res (i.e. with floating point processor). All without being heavily loaded.
- very quiet flow through design with big slow rotating fan (optionally easy to clean)
- low electricity consumption for 24/365 operation
- OK to: 1 GB of fast RAM, so it does not swap memory on the HDD
- 2 HDD drive bays ... yes, of course
- Would be nice, but not "need to have" : 2 USB ports (could be 3.0, but not necessarily)
- Would be nice too : 1 or 2 powered E-SATA ports
- Would be nice : possibility to switch off the diodes, so that it could be places in a bedroom at night.

@Claus: I agree almost with all. I diagree about USB3. It should be applied as soon as possible. Backup via USB 2.0 right know is pure torment.

Do we agree that USB 3.0 is too fast for other harddisks - would have to be flash-based memory to take advantage of 3.0?

Regarding diodes, how about a dim facility where all diodes could be dimmed to a desirable level (incl. off)

No. I disaggree. I think the backup would be faster with USB3 (lockal backup), Backup on USB2 takes forever... Restore is the same.
I am waiting for USB3 upgade.

... but, a harddisk will transfer something like 100 MB/sec. Am I right that USB 2.0 can reach 120 MB/sec?

I agree with the theoretical speed of both. but practically speed of backup via USB2.0 in synology is tragically low. I guess it would be significant better/faster with USB3.0.

OK, I guess USB 3.0 would at least double the speed - and given that niewiesznic says actual speed is lower, maybe triple speed ... worth the effort, definitely, even if it doesn't take full advantage of USB 3.0 speed (unless you have a flash-based disk).
