Will time backup support a USB disk there some of the time?

Postby yerbabie » Thu May 26, 2011 12:25 am

Hi All,

I'm looking to backup a 211j via a USB disk, I've setup a backup task to backup the unit with the standard settings, i.e every hour with time backup app.

The idea is I will leave the disk plugged in once a week overnight, and the backup will update the data, I then remove it again the next day to take off site.

Is this going to work?,

Are there going to be any potential issues?, other than a heap of warnings when logged in?

If the whole system goes belly up, how hard will it be to restore the files, if this is the only backup method? (I'm not to fussed about recreating users / shares etc.)

What will happen if the disk is pulled when a backup task is running? will I have to cancel any jobs first? should I just make it once a day at 1am for example?

-thanks.

I have a DS211J running DSM.1-1613

I ran a test on Friday to see if this was possible.

Monday through Thursday my drive was in the station and backups ran successfully. Friday I removed the drive and the backup failed. Saturday and Sunday I had the drive plugged back in and the backup was successful but only with no backup successful email.

There was no notifications or warnings Friday morning when the scheduled backup was supposed to run.

When I had plugged the drive back in for the Saturday and Sunday backup, instead of plugging it into the NAS unit I had plugged it into a USB hub connected to the NAS.

I hope this helps.
