There's still no way to limit the usage of TimeMachine! I'd like to limit the storage to a certain amount and not let it fill up the NAS.

Do what I do. Use iSCSI :)
Works like a charm ;)

PS.
I would also like that feature though.

I don't use this feature myself, but can't you use a user on quota for the backup task?

If you use iSCSI you can dedicate a given amount of space. Should work with TM.

That's what I've done. But since TM is a feature of DSM it should work with quotas. As all other NAS do (QNAP, ReadyNAS). ESPECIALLY since they just launched the new DSM.

You've got a point here :)

Mmm, I don't have access to my Synology DS209 right now to actually check, but I thought that it is possible to:

  • create a shared folder
  • set a disk quota for that shared folder (e.g. 200Gb)
  • tell the Time Machine on the Mac to use that folder.

(Just make sure that the recycle bin on NAS is deactivated :-)

I don't see any setting for disk quota on 3.0-1337. I seem to remember doing that when I set up in a previous fw version, but don't see it now. Can anyone point the way?

Thanks.

Correction: you can:

  • create a user called "TimeMachine"
  • assign a quota
  • have the Mac connect as that user...

Well, it's been working on my NAS for ages. I created a folder called "timemachine" and then a user called "timemachine" who only has access to the "timemachine"-folder and whos quota has been set to 200GB. I then use that user to log onto my NAS from TimeMachine on my mac and it works like a charm. When the 200GB is reached it starts to remove old files just as expected.

It might not be as simple as checking some "make TimeMachine work automatically"-checkbox in the DSM, but it's pretty simple

DS410 running Latest [4 x 2TB RE4-GP WD2002FYPS] (RAID 5)
CS407 running 3.1-1636 [4 x 1TB RE3 WD1002FBYS] (RAID 5)
DS106e - retired

I would prefer to see the limit size option in menu of DSM/Time Machine. When it is supposed to be in the first place, by the way. I don't think it is hard or to expensive to implement it into DSM.

aarfing,

I'm doing exactly the same as you describe, but when I look in TM preferences it says that the entire NAS is available. Does yours also say that when not backing up? I haven't gotten close to the quota I set for the user Timemachine, so I can't say what happens there. Would I be able to change the quota just to see what happens with TM, then change it back, or would that mess us TM?

BTW, I use automountmaker to log in my user.

This is exactly the problem. TM is not showing the quoted space.
