rsync between 2 DS's >> 2 way problem >> possible cloud

Postby alfonzobonzo » Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:43 pm

Hello all,

I've done a fair bit of searching / reading & been lurking around for a while, I have tried 2 different potential solution but am no further to getting what I want. Maybe its not possible.

i have 2 ds's

One I want to keep in my home office, & one I want to put in a clients office (where i sometimes spend time working, with remote access to administrate)

ive set up an rsync to the remote one and that works ok but id like to use that data when im there. But because its not a 2 way sync, any work I do there would be lost as soon as my home server sync'd to it.

Also tried cloud-station, but you don't seem to be able to use 'the other' ds as a client machine?

Another reason why i'd like this to work, is so that i can give read access to live data to my client via another user login.

any help appreciated, even if it is to say, "yeah, you cant make that work,,.... yet"

cheers

I read your question as: how do I enable two-way sync without destroying new data at either side?

The answer lies in the discovery of 'new data'. What do you define as 'new data'?
Is it a bigger file? A newer file? If a file is modified on both sides, which one do you keep?

There's a tool that specifically targets this problem: Unison. It's like rsync but copies data both ways.
With some commandline work you can get it synchronizing on your NAS!

Thankyou for the quick response. Yes, spot on!

new data = new files or modified files.

i wont have the version problem as it will only ever be me for the time being, So "I" will only be "here or there"

I'll read into your links and report back.

even if I could set up an rsync from the remote server back to main, in my case would be fine. But synology wont rsync back without renaming folders

unison sounds like the way forward

cheers

Ok, I have unison installed on both DS's

relatively easy as both use the same processor (ds211j & ds212j)

ipkg installation steps are slightly different now on DSM4 (see wiki)

so now i assume there is no gui for unison, and the --help looks very daunting at first. More reading to do i guess.

hope its worth it! lol.

Thanks

Hi. I have pretty much the same requirement. Did you get this working ?

Any links you can give to the most useful guidance much appreciated. Tx.

nah, still struggling, not had the time tbh.

only got as far as installing unison on both DS's but then got depressed / confused by the command line requirements of actually using unison.

all seems a bit clunky.

why cant they just write a cloud-station client that will run on the DS?

Thanks for the feedback. I'd read around re. Unison and wasn't convinced it was going to be easy enough for me to implement either. Sounds like that's right.

Given my requirement, in which I'm either modifying data on the DS211j or on the DS411j but never on both at the same time, I was wondering whether it works to reverse the sync configuration each time I move from one end of my VPN to the other. Had you considered trying this ?
