How Long for "Verifying Destination Size"?

Postby Carl » Sat Sep 04, 2010 6:34 pm

I have a DS409+ and I am trying to backup a couple folders to an eSATA drive. The drive was formatted using the wizard to ext3 and the backup job was created without problem but when i run the backup it has been "Verifying destination size" for over an hour now! Surely this can't be correct.

Any ideas?

I am having a very similar problem with a DS409+. I formatted a 750gb USB drive to "native", then initiated a backup, which should be about 350gb. It took a couple hours to get past "Verifying destination size" the first time, and eventually emailed the error "The Local Backup on {drive} was canceled because of insufficient disk space on the Local Backup disk." On subsequent attempts, it only stays at "verifying destination size" for several minutes before failing. Carl, did you ever solve your problem?

No i did not, i just gave up using the back up "feature". I had expected someone from Synology to either admit the bug or at least log it.

It is very frustrating to have to test their products for them (after you have purchase it no less) and submit the test results via their bug reporting system as well!!!

I can't believe we are the only ones with this problem.

Synology, what are you doing about this issue?

Since my first post, I've upgraded to DSM 3.0-1337(previously was at 2.something) and formatted my USB drive with ext4. I'm still having the same problem; in the backup log, I'm getting "Failed to backup because backup space is insufficient". Some word from Synology on this would be really nice!

I am using DSM 3 and I can manually copy a file from my iMac to the eSata connected share I just can't use the built in backup as it never gets past the "verifying destination size" step. So it seems to me it is a problem with the backup code in DSM.

@ andrewk,

Would it be possible for you to calculate the backup amount with "du" command through CLI?
Please access the DiskStation via Telnet/SSH console, and input the command "du /volume1/folder", where the amount should be about the 350gb as you reckon.

Concerning if the folders/files contain symbolic links would've possibly caused the destination size to insufficient. It is the best way to determine the actual size to be backed-up to the external USB attached hard drive in advance.

@ Carl,

Apart from the "du" command you could help me to investigate the problem further, please send your Backup/Kernel Log message to Synology Tech Support via submitting a Support Form. It will help the technicians to do the further investigation.

Thank you.

I realize it's been a year, but I'm finally getting back around to this issue. Our usage has increased to 505gb. Since I'm backing up both folders that exist on volume1, I ran "du /volume1/". The result was "529600592 /volume1/", or right at 505gb. I have updated to the current DSM (3.2), and still have the "verifying destination size" status for a long time, followed by "failed to backup because backup space is insufficient" error in the backup log.

Latest DSM 4.0 and I just ended up here after searching to see if the (so far) two hours of 'Verifying Destination Size' is normal for my DS210j, so it seems this "feature" is still having some issues with very basic disk management.

I can't understand why there's so much disk activity going on, what the hell can it be doing?

I don't suppose anyone has a fix for this? I'm trying to do a local backup but it just sits there saying Verifying Destination Size forever. After 24 hours I stopped it. ( I had to kill the backup process by hand, since stopping the backup from the GUI left the process running.) Then I re-formatted the USB disk I was backing up to and tried again. Exactly the same problem.

So far as I can tell it's unusable. Surely it must work for some people, so what is causing this? Presumably Synology aren't going to say anything helful. Or indeed anything at all.

I'm having exactly the same issue with a DS411slim and an external USB HDD to do the backup on it.

After having submitted that issue to Synology support, they told me to de-install all 3rd party software, as this could be the reason for having trouble.

My guess is, that after a certain number of files have been reached, it takes way to long to determine the backup size. As a "du /volume1/<folder>" takes hours to return, maybe this is the same way how Synology determines the backup size. After a few hours of that message, I manually cancelled the backup. It would never finish :-(

Is there any solution for this issue?

Thanks a lot.

Matthias.

Wait, two years later, and a significant bug (which I just stumbled into) on backing up files, for a backup device, is still un-addressed? Seriously?

Right now I can't even connect to my Synology, as it's CPU is in overdrive on a backup it cannot calculate. I don't even care that there's a new software package that can do this; the built in one should be disabled.

Between this and lack of HFS+ or exfat support, and the surprise-to-me lack of packages like Plex for the 413 (PPC architecture), and the excitement of a new tool is being replaced with the fear I've bought a very expensive lemon.

I have the same experience with my DS409+ and DSM 4.1-2668. I have set a backup consisting only of the system info to be backed to an external disk (eSATA, NTFS, 750MB of which about 350MB is used). The destination size check takes roughly 10 minutes and then the backup fails, notifying me by email "Local backup on ... has been canceled because the local backup disk is running out of space."
So I see two issues - why such tiny backup fails and why it takes so long to fail...

Based on Synology's reputation, I was expecting a response in up to 3 months... I wasn't expecting nearly 3 years would pass

Just stumbled on this issue myself. I have a CIFS mounted and I'm backing up the mount dir to another folder on my DS. 12 hours later and it is still "verifying destination size".
