Hardware crash

Postby Erich Heer » Mon Apr 23, 2012 6:02 pm

I have not bought a Synology NAS Server - yet. But I am interested in a DS412+ .
I am also not sure if this is the correct forum but it has to do with Hardware compatibility.

I had a Western Digital MYBOOK World II with 2x 1 TB mirrored (RAID 1). Within the 7? years I had this white box two times the computerboard crashed. The first time I got a new box but I could not mount the drives in the new box and I had to restore the content to a LINUX PC as the format on these drives was EXT3 or EXT4 - but it was a lot of work as I have no LINUX and I had to set up a new PC every time. The last time I even found a tool that made it possible to read the drive and export all the data to a WIN7 PC. So I had no loss but a lot of work and a lot of grey hair.

With RAID 1 this is rather easy. You have two identical discs. But what would happen if the RAID 5 array of the DS412+ is o.k. but the computerboard of the box will not work anymore in 2020 and there are no spare parts? How can I access the data then?

Best regards, Erich

I was seriously just coming in to more or less post this exact same question! I currently have a DS1511+ and have had no issues, but I'd still like to know what to do if I have disks in SHR and the device itself (not the disks) fails completely.

My hope/guess is that I could use a configuration backup to built a replacement to a new DS with at least as many drive bays, and then recover everything. Any chance this is true?

I'd like the nitty gritty on this process; e.g. if I had only two disks in SHR in a 5-bay unit and the device failed, could I recover the data on the two disks in a 2-disk model, or a 4-disk model, etc? (I'd of course buy another similar unit to what I had, but I'd like to know all the permutations of possibilities.)
