Newbie media streaming question on ds212+ with DSM4

Postby Transentient » Mon Mar 26, 2012 10:02 pm

I am an novice to media streaming, but have a basic knowledge of what is required.

I have previously dabbled with unreal's media streaming server software, while it worked, ussing mms protocol, it was not succesfull, mainly due to insufficient upload speed. I now have approx 4Mb upload speed, and so was interested to learn i could media stream from my synology ds212+, and thought of looking into the process again.

My questions is, having enabled the streaming server, how do i connect the client player to the stream, eg. with WMP? Do i use mms://ip address/filename etc?

Thanks

Not sure what your trying to do, if you want remote access to your music use Audiostation service on the NAS.

If you just want to access music on the NAS via your local network just add the shared folder path into WMP's own media library, you don't use anything special.

Remote access to videos can be done the easy way through Photostation service, use the Synology assistant application to upload and convert the videos into a suitable format for streaming over the internet.

You can then login to Photostation remotely through your web browser and plays the videos or use the DSPhoto app for smartphones.

The other way is to try Filestation/DSFile but your videos most likely would need to be web optimized (use Handbrake to generate MP4 with web optimized enabled), or activate FTP/WebDAV and use something like XBMC to remotely login via those protocols and play media that way.
